It seems that Aamir Khan, whose latest release Laal Singh Chaddha underperformed at the box office, is currently stranded in the open waters. After reports that Salman Khan opted out of the actor’s Spanish film remake of Champions, the grapevine is full of more discouraging news. If what we hear is true, then Aamir’s son Junaid Khan’s debut vehicle Maharaja has been perpetually shelved. According to industry rumors, Aditya Chopra has decided to put the company on the back burner to focus on other projects.

Revealing details exclusively to Bollywood Hungama, a well-placed industry source says, “Many parts of Maharaja have been filmed, however Yash Raj Films does not want to take the venture forward as it is a high-risk undertaking.” While this news of Maharaja being shelved comes as a shock, reports indicate that Aamir Khan has been making frantic calls to YRF boss Aditya Chopra. “With the update that Junaid’s debut has been shelved, Aamir reached out to Adi to get a clearer picture. In conversation with him, Adi assured Aamir that although Maharaja is taking a backseat and is not being shelved completely,” the source reveals.
“For now, Adi wants to focus on War 2, Tiger 3 and Pathaan Vs Tiger, three movies that can take YRF to the top of film production. In his conversation with Aamir, Adi pointed out that he is currently looking to focus all of his and YRF’s energies on these three films and his success. After which, there are chances that he will return to Maharaja to complete the project”.
While currently, the future of Junaid Khan’s debut hangs in the balance, the film tanked earlier this year in February. In fact, a massive set was built at Vijay Nagar in Marol with director Siddharth P Malhotra and the production design team working hard to lay the foundation.
As for the movie itself, Maharaja is reportedly based on Maharaj Libel Case. In 1862, the head of a religious section brought a case against a newspaper that had exposed its sexual exploitation of female devotees. Junaid Khan will play the role of journalist Karsandas Mulji.
