Seismologists map Earth’s core using a technique from space exploration

A new way of mapping the Earth’s inner core has been developed by taking a page from deep space exploration.

Using a new technique originally designed to explore the cosmos, scientists have unveiled structures deep beneath our feet, paving the way towards a new map revealing what Earth’s interior looks like.

Similar to the way doctors use ultrasounds to look inside the human body, earth scientists use seismic waves to probe the Earth’s interior.

However, their task is much harder as they need to wait for an earthquake to record data, and when that happens, it only provides information in a ‘piecemeal’ manner.

The figures are restricted to a tiny region, and most of the time it’s impossible to distinguish weaker echoes from noise.

The team of space and earth scientists used an algorithm called the Sequencer that was originally developed to find interesting trends in astronomical datasets.

They used it to analyse thousands of seismograms – records of vibrations of the ground following an Earthquake – collected over the past 30 years.

Team member Dr Brice Ménard, an astrophysicist at Johns Hopkins University in the US, said: ‘With this new way to look at the data globally, we were able to see weak signals much more clearly.

‘We were finally able to identify the seismic echoes and use them to create a map.’

Study co-author Dr Doyen Kim, a seismologist at the University of Maryland, said: ‘Imagine you’re outside in the dark. If you clap your hands and then hear an echo, you know that a wall or vertical structure is in front of you. This is how bats echolocate their surroundings.’

Using that principle, the team used the Sequencer algorithm to go through thousands of seismograms for echoes to create a new map showing details of the Earth’s mantle, just above the liquid iron core, at a depth of 3,000 kilometres (1,860 miles).

This map shows a large area under the Pacific and reveals hot and dense regions below Hawaii and the Marquesas islands in French Polynesia.

Similar to the age when European explorers drew the first incomplete maps of America, earth scientists are charting the Earth’s interior.

The Sequencer algorithm, developed by Dr Ménard and graduate student Dalya Baron, has the ability to automatically find interesting trends in any type of dataset, and has now enabled discoveries in astrophysics and geology.

The findings were be published in the journal Science.

Santaco confirms taxi fare increases come into effect on 1 July

0

Taxi fare increases will apply from 1 July 2020, putting further financial strain on millions of commuters who have already suffered as a result of the lockdown-induced economic downturn.

Following robust engagements with the Department of Transport and Minister Fikile Mbalula, the South African National Taxi Council (Santaco) — one of the largest public transport associations in the country — announced that taxi fares would be increased to combat the negative financial impact of COVID-19 and the subsequent lockdown.

For months, the taxi industry has languished under a severe bout of inactivity with lockdown Levels 4 and 5 drastically decreasing commuter volumes. Although recent regulatory reprieves allow for a reopening of the economy, stringent health and safety protocols — which limit passenger capacities in minibus taxis to 70% — continue to plague the industry’s revenue models.

Mbalula attempts to pacify taxi industry

In an attempt to offset grievous financial losses, taxi associations in Gauteng called for massive fare hikes. The Alexandra Taxi Association (ATA) said that it would be forced to increase its fares by 172% in the coming weeks.

While Santaco rebuked the move to raise fares to unaffordable levels, the Council argued that government had failed to provide the taxi industry with adequate financial assistance. In an attempt to force government’s hand, Santaco said that it would support the call for a provincial shutdown of taxi services.

Mbalula revealed that consultations with Santaco and the National Taxi Council (NTC) had averted a proposed shutdown but that expectations placed on government were unrealistic. On Thursday, Mbalula elaborated on meetings with taxi industry stakeholders, noting that while government had committed to provide financial relief, taxi operators would not be fully compensated for lost revenue.

Mbalula added that while taxi operators were well within their rights to raise fares, these price hikes needed to follow inflation trends and not overburden commuters with unaffordable tariffs. The minister noted that, as a fundamental pillar of the public transport sector, the taxi industry needed to remain sustainable while catering to the basic needs of commuters.

The transport minister further explained that consultations with Santaco would resume on 16 June.

Taxi fare increases on 1 July: What you’ll be expected to pay

In the meantime, however, Santaco has resolved to support across the board fare increases. While the Council has not yet revealed finer details of the increase, industry insiders claim that fares could likely rise between 10% and 25%.

While this increase is much lighter than those proposed by the ATA, these tariffs increases will be out of line with inflation rates noted by Mbalula.

Santaco is expected to provide clarity on the taxi fare increases in due course.

Stacey Abrams Schools Meghan McCain On Authoritarian Trump, Georgia Voting Mess

0

Meghan McCain tried to blame Democrats for the primary voting disaster in Georgia this week, but Stacey Abrams pulled her up short.

“There’s a lot of finger-pointing going on and you seem to be implying that it was Georgia’s secretary of state that was targeting communities of color,” McCain said on “The View” Thursday. “But most of the counties that had issues this week were run by Democrats.”

Abrams, a gubernatorial candidate in 2018 and a possible vice presidential pick, told McCain that the Republican secretary of state was the election superintendent. As such, he’s responsible for overseeing all voting in the state — even in Democratic areas ― and problems were rife throughout Georgia, she noted.

“Your access to democracy shouldn’t depend on your county of residence,” Abrams said.

The pair also went at it over What McCain described as Abrams’ comparison of the U.S. to Turkey under dictator Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

″[Erdogan] is a horrific, murderous dictator. Do you really think it’s fair to call the United States no better than Turkey?” McCain asked.

“I didn’t call it no better than Turkey,” Abrams said. “I said that we’re on the path to populist authoritarianism similar to what we saw with Erdogan.”

Abrams pointed out that Trump has already begun to follow in Erdogan’s path by stacking the courts with judges who support him, eliminating independent guardrails on democracy and using his power to call for the militarization of public institutions.

“We’re seeing evidence of that in the United States,” Abrams said.

“We have to acknowledge the authoritarian nature of Donald Trump,” she added. “And we’ve got to nip it in the bud if we want democracy to continue here, and if we want to continue to be the moral leader abroad.”

Check out Abrams’ take on the Georgia primary in the video above. Her clash with McCain begins at 3:16.

Abrams’ warning on Trump’s “authoritarian nature” is shown in the following tweet:

Volunteers critical of Brazil’s response to the coronavirus pandemic dug 100 graves with black crosses in Rio’s Copacabana Beach as a reminder of the more than 40,000 people who have died because of the virus in the country so far.

The event was held by an organization called Rio de Paz. In a Facebook post, the organization said the graves were meant to protest a “succession of mistakes made by the Federal Government in conducting this humanitarian crisis.” Brazil has become a major epicenter of COVID-19, with the number of infections there second only to the United States.

Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro has been criticized for downplaying the gravity of the pandemic and questioning the validity of reported case numbers, suggesting they are inflated to damage his government’s reputation.

Citizens were outraged after Bolsonaro was seen on Facebook calling for his supporters to enter public hospitals and film what they see in an effort to prove that there are fewer patients hospitalized for COVID-19 than reported. Medical officials say walking into hospitals without permission is prohibited and risks spreading the virus and violating patient privacy.

Earlier this month, the Brazilian president also came under fire when the Ministry of Health suddenly stopped publishing a running total of new COVID-19 infections on its website, instead sharing only the number of new confirmed cases each day.

A justice on Brazil’s Supreme Court later ruled that the ministry must start providing the data again. Justice Alexandre de Moraes said in his ruling that concealing such information could hinder efforts to understand the spread of the virus and have “disastrous consequences” for the country’s pandemic response.

In a tweet, Justice Gilmar Mendes called the ministry’s “manipulation” of data a “maneuver of totalitarian regimes.”

Former NA speaker Ayaz Sadiq tests positive for coronavirus

0

Former National Assembly speaker Ayaz Sadiq has become the latest PML-N leader to test positive for the coronavirus, announced party spokesperson Marriyum Aurangzeb on Friday.

The PML-N stated that Sadiq has gone into quarantine in his home after testing positive for the virus.

The announcement comes a day after Aurangzeb announced that party president and Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly Shehbaz Sharif had also tested positive for coronavirus.

Earlier this week, PML-N Secretary-General Ahsan Iqbal also tested positive for coronavirus.

“I request my friends and well-wishers to pray for my quick recovery,” Iqbal had written on Twitter.

“May God keep everyone safe from this pandemic,” he added.

PML-N spokesperson Marriyum Aurangzeb has also tested positive for the coronavirus along with her mother, it emerged this week.

Sadiq and others have joined a long list of lawmakers who have tested positive for the virus, including former prime minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi and PTI MPA from Sindh Khurrum Sher Zaman.

On Monday, Railways Minister Sheikh Rashid Ahmed and PTIA MNA Jai Prakash contracted the infection.

On Sunday, PPP MPA Sharjeel Memon announced he had tested positive for coronavirus and had gone into self-isolation.

Memon is the Sindh government’s focal person for coronavirus in Hyderabad and also attended the provincial assembly session a few days ago.

Last week, PML-N Punjab Assembly lawmaker Mian Naveed Ali from Pakpattan had tested positive for coronavirus.

Earlier, Minister of State for Narcotics Shehryar Afridi also tested positive for the virus joining a long list of lawmakers to contract the coronavirus in Pakistan. PTI’s chief whip in the National Assembly Aamir Dogar also tested positive for coronavirus.

Previously, many politicians including ANP’s Ghulam Ahmad Bilour, Sindh Governor Imran Ismail, Sindh education minister Saeed Ghani, National Assembly Speaker Asad Qaiser, and Punjab Assembly Deputy Speaker Dost Muhammad Mazari had tested positive for coronavirus, after which they went into self-isolation and recovered.

PTI Punjab Member of Provincial Assembly (MPA) Shaheen Raza was the first lawmaker in the country to succumb to the virus.

PTI MPA Mian Jamsheduddin Kakakhel from Nowshera and PML-N MPA Shaukat Manzoor Cheema from Gujranwala also passed away earlier this month after being on the ventilator for a few days.

Scientists grow human embryo ‘blueprint’ using stem cells

0

Scientists created a human embryo blueprint from stem cells (PA)

A new ’embryo-like’ model developed in the lab using stem cells has allowed scientists to observe the earliest stages of human development for the first time.

Researchers from the University of Cambridge and the Hubrecht Institute in The Netherlands, who created the model, said their new system mimics certain key features of a 20-day-old human embryo but does not have the potential to develop into a fully-formed embryo.

They believe their work could help shed light on the causes of birth defects and other medical issues such as infertility and miscarriage.

Until now, this type of human embryonic development has not been directly observed due to ethical restrictions on use of human embryos in research.

This is because research on human embryos, which can only happen under a licence in the UK, has a 14-day cut off point and it is currently illegal to keep them alive in a lab setting for more than two weeks after fertilisation.

The researchers said their embryo-like model, which is just 72 hours old, does not have brain cells or any of the tissues needed for implantation in the womb and, thus, conforms to current ethical standards.

The study, published in the journal Nature, was reviewed and approved by the ethics committee of the University of Cambridge.

Dr Naomi Moris, in the University of Cambridge’s department of genetics, and first author of the report, said: ‘This is a hugely exciting new model system, which will allow us to reveal and probe the processes of early human embryonic development in the lab for the first time.

‘Our system is a first step towards modelling the emergence of the human body plan, and could prove useful for studying what happens when things go wrong, such as in birth defects.’

During early developmental stages when the human embryo is just a group of cells, it folds in on itself to form a three-layered structure, a process known as gastrulation.

These layers later go on to form different tissue types present in the human body.

The process of gastrulation usually begins around 14 days after fertilisation, hence scientists have been unable to observe the mechanisms of this process.

Birth defects are thought to originate during this crucial period of development.

The researchers observed the genes that were expressed in their three-day-old ‘gastruloid’ model.

They found ‘a clear signature’ of the processes that give rise to important human body parts such as thoracic muscles, bone and cartilage.

While similar animals models have been developed before, the researchers said certain drugs that work on animals models may not be useful for humans.

For example, they said, the anti-morning sickness drug thalidomide passed clinical trials after tests in mice but caused severe birth defects in humans.

For this reason it is important to develop better models of human development, the researchers added.

Alfonso Martinez Arias. (Credits: University of Cambridge / SWNS)

Commenting on the research, Professor Robin Lovell-Badge, a senior group leader and head of the Laboratory of Stem Cell Biology and Developmental Genetics at the Francis Crick Institute, said that while a robust model of ‘this rather mysterious period of human embryo development’ is needed to understand why things so wrong, the researchers’ gastruloid model needs to be validated, which may require obtaining embryos that are surplus to IVF treatment and ‘cannot be done in the UK and many other countries for legal reasons, as it would cross the 14-day limit’.

Prof Lovell-Badge said: ‘If the law were changed, however, even a few such cultured embryos might suffice to validate the model.

‘Until then, there will always be doubt about this or other models of human development during this critical, but hidden period.’
