Coronavirus world updates: Spain holds grim memorial, UK tourists arrive in Greece, American visitors ignore Ireland’s rules

From the palm-fringed beaches of southern India to the bar-lined streets of a Spanish island and the rolling hills of Ireland, restaurants, pubs and clubs have emerged as front lines in efforts to prevent the re-emergence of the coronavirus.

With Europe’s summer vacation season kicking into high gear for millions weary of months of lockdown, scenes of drunken British and German tourists on Spain’s Mallorca island ignoring social distancing rules and reports of American visitors flouting quarantine measures in Ireland raised fears of a resurgence of infections in countries that have battled for months to flatten the COVID-19 curve.

Germany’s foreign minister condemned the rowdy tourists for imperiling hard-won gains in efforts to contain the virus. “We just recently managed to open the borders again in Europe.

We cannot risk this by reckless behavior,” Heiko Maas told Funke Media Group. “Otherwise, new measures will be inevitable.”

Meanwhile, in the United States, Florida reached another ominous record with 156 virus deaths reported on Thursday as the state continued to experience a swift rise in cases.

The state Department of Health reported 13,965 new coronavirus cases, bringing the total to nearly 316,000.

And in hard-hit Texas, refrigerated trailers were being rushed in to handle the growing number of bodies as deaths surge in the state.

Dr. Ivan Melendez, Hidalgo County’s public health authority, said it’s not uncommon for a deceased COVID-19 patient to lay on a stretcher for 10 hours in the community’s overcrowded hospitals until the body is picked up and put in a freezer.

“Before someone gets a bed in the COVID ICU unit, someone has to die there,” Melendez said.

Also on Thursday, the Boy Scouts of America announced it was postponing next year’s National Jamboree in West Virginia.

The increasing number of virus cases and the pandemic’s persistence and unpredictability make it impossible for the Boy Scouts to comply with its “Be Prepared” motto, said the announcement on the organization’s website.

In a move designed to stop the spread of the coronavirus and shake off Mallorca’s reputation as a party hub, regional authorities ordered the closure of all establishments along “Beer Street” and “Ham Street,” as the popular party areas near the beach of Palma de Mallorca are known, and on another boulevard in nearby Magaluf.

Bar owners reacted angrily to the restrictions on the islands that have seen, like most regions in Spain, recent spikes in infections. Bars and nightclubs employ some 20,000 people in the region.

“They are undertaking drastic measures that are typical of other countries, closing entire streets and curtailing the free exercise of private initiative,” Jesús Sánchez, who leads a local business association told The Associated Press.

He blamed “clandestine parties” for some of the images of tourists ignoring virus containment measures.

At a solemn service in Madrid, relatives of about 100 COVID-19 victims sat socially distanced with representatives of health workers and other vital professions and with Spain’s king and queen to pay tribute to the dead and those fighting the pandemic.

In an emotional speech, Hernando Calleja said he was sharing the pain of the loss of his brother José María, a well-known journalist and writer in Madrid.

“Let’s not forget that the coronavirus was and continues to be a cold, cruel and wrecking executioner,” Calleja said at the ceremony at Madrid’s Royal Palace.

Another European tourism hot spot, Greece, lifted a ban on flights from Britain on July 15 and on Thursday welcomed the first arrivals with random testing at Athens airport.

Alexandros Maziotis, a Greek who lives in the UK, said he wasn’t tested.

“I’m planning to be a bit careful, especially the first week, so I make sure I don’t pass something to my parents,” he said.

In France, which has seen new outbreaks, Prime Minister Jean Castex said masks would be mandatory in closed public places as of next week — sooner than August 1 as previously announced.

One of the Catholic Church’s holiest sites, Lourdes, held its first-ever online pilgrimage, to mark the anniversary of claims by 19th-century girl Bernadette Soubirous that the Virgin Mary appeared to her there.

More than than 13.5 million people have been infected worldwide and over 580,000 have died, according to a tally by Johns Hopkins University. The true numbers are thought to be far higher for a number of reasons, including limited testing.

Brazil, which hit at least 75,000 confirmed deaths on Wednesday was poised to report 2 million confirmed cases on Thursday. The country has recorded more than 1,000 daily deaths on average in a gruesome plateau that has yet to tilt downward.

India’s record daily increase of nearly 32,700 cases pushed its total close to 1 million and led authorities to reimpose a three-day lockdown and night curfew in the popular western beach state of Goa, two weeks after it was reopened to tourists.

The state’s top elected official, Pramod Sawant, said people there were flouting social distancing rules and not wearing face masks. Nearly 40,000 people have been fined in the past two weeks for not wearing masks.

Israel also registered a new daily record of confirmed coronavirus cases, and a new nationwide lockdown appeared imminent.

Hezi Levi, the Health Ministry director general, told Army Radio that he would be pushing at a meeting Thursday for more stringent movement restrictions, including a possible nationwide lockdown on weekends.

Americans heading overseas were causing consternation in Ireland, amid fears that some were ignoring the government’s requirement that they self-isolate for 14 days after arrival.

The Irish Post cited restaurant owners who complained they had no way of knowing if American visitors had completed the two-week quarantine.

Showing that there can be a way forward, China became the first economy to resume economic growth since the pandemic began in its central city of Wuhan.

It reported an unexpectedly strong 3.2% expansion in the latest quarter after lockdowns were lifted and factories and stores reopened. The 6.8% contraction in January-March was the country’s worst downturn since at least the mid-1960s.

In Britain, the national statistics office said clear signs were emerging that job losses will skyrocket over coming months to levels not seen since the 1980s.

Hedge Fund Set to Own McClatchy Oversaw Cuts at Canadian Newspapers

“It’s pretty frustrating,” said Brian Gibson, the president of the local union that represents 140 editorial staff at Postmedia’s Vancouver papers. “They give us a lowdown on how much money we’re losing and the need for cost cutting, but then they go and give these big bonuses. It’s a huge problem and it’s getting to the point where it’s unacceptable.”

Since 2017, Postmedia has paid out over $6.2 million Canadian, or about $4.5 million, in bonuses to its five top executives, including Mr. MacLeod, the chief executive, and Paul Godfrey, the executive chairman of the board.

In that same period, the editorial ranks at The National Post, its flagship paper, have been reduced by about a third, according to three of the people. The number of journalists at its Vancouver papers — the Vancouver Sun and the Province — have been cut in half, according to Mr. Gibson. Altogether, the company has cut over 1,600 employees since 2016, or 38 percent of its staff, based on company filings.

“We have less boots on the ground,” Mr. Gibson said. “We’re not even covering some city hall things, which we miss.”

Postmedia said in a statement that it did not “share specific numbers” on staffing. But Mr. MacLeod, the chief executive, acknowledged complaints about the cuts. “That’s something we wrestle with,” he said. “It’s a fair question.”

Hedge funds and private equity companies have become a force in the news industry. Alden Global Capital controls roughly 200 outlets through its newspaper chain, MediaNews Group. It has made money in an ailing business partly by cutting the number of reporters and editors at The Denver Post and other publications, moves that have angered journalists and press advocates who accuse the firm of diminishing local news coverage.

FOR THOSE OF US BORN ON THIS DAY:

Happy Birthday! The months ahead are likely to start on a quiet note; too quiet, in fact. The temptation to spend some extra cash should be resisted! September is the month where you’ll probably overspend, but October introduces a very dithery mood when it comes to cash. Opportunities to boost your income might not be as prestigious as you’d like! December starts on a hectic note, but soon settles, perhaps too much, because the weeks after New Year could seem quite flat! May is likely to be a complicated month: you’ll need to step out of the limelight to make the most of the planets. Being reliable and proving that you can be trusted pays dividends!

ARIES DAILY HOROSCOPE | Mar 21 – Apr 19

A marginally more impulsive approach is likely to make short work of the more mundane tasks, while a little spontaneity on your part might pave the way to a couple of one-off opportunities. However, the stress of taking a minor risk could leave a very slightly sour imprint on the day!

Today’s Numbers:   3, 14, 22, 26, 33, 45

TAURUS DAILY HOROSCOPE | Apr 20 – May 20

The improving vibe brings a slight catch: that is – you may miss some advantageous news. Do pay attention to what is being said: incoming information may be patchy and therefore easily misinterpreted. If you do miss something, you may get another chance in a few days’ time!

Today’s Numbers:   1, 4, 18, 21, 34, 43

GEMINI DAILY HOROSCOPE | May 21 – Jun 20

It could seem as though a Jupiter/moon mix will pave the way for some minor problems, which in turn could test your patience. However, there could be a genuinely positive angle to these small blunders and glitches. You may need to find a way to get around a moment of carelessness, though!

Today’s Numbers: 3, 17, 23, 27, 38, 49

CANCER DAILY HOROSCOPE | Jun 21 – Jul 22

Romance may look interesting, but do be aware of the marginally volatile vibe. It may even be best to accept certain comments at face value, since there’s a chance of a brief, whirlwind encounter, which may not develop into anything. It’s a day to enjoy if you don’t over- invest in casual exchanges!

Today’s Numbers:   5, 11, 24, 29, 33, 47

LEO DAILY HOROSCOPE | Jul 23 – Aug 22

Yesterday’s demanding vibe should start to disperse. There’s a fairly impulsive vibe about the day, but unlike most signs you may need to work a little harder in order to access it. What you may also need to watch out for is dwindling will-power when it comes to financial transactions!

Today’s Numbers: 6, 12, 20, 24, 34, 42

VIRGO DAILY HOROSCOPE | Aug 23 – Sep 22

It’s the sort of day where whatever may seem to drop in your lap will require a certain amount of concentration. While support and communications will be working in your favor, you may need to pay attention to the smaller details: do make sure that your facts and figures numbers add up the way they should!

Today’s Numbers:  7, 13, 25, 29, 32, 48

LIBRA DAILY HOROSCOPE | Sep 23 – Oct 22

There’s a lot to be said for being cautiously adaptable on the work/career front. It’s a day that could potentially be a very constructive one, if you don’t waste the opportunities. Looking forward instead of backward may help you to zone in constructively on a lingering matter!

Today’s Numbers: 5, 11, 22, 27, 39, 46

SCORPIO DAILY HOROSCOPE | Oct 23 – Nov 21

There are some fun influences about, but these will be undermined by a slight sense of pressure, since unexpected work-related issues could develop out of nowhere and dampen the mood somewhat. Given the element of poor timing, it’s certainly a day to plan ahead and stick to schedules!

Today’s Numbers:  3, 7, 14, 22, 41, 45

SAGITTARIUS DAILY HOROSCOPE | Nov 22 – Dec 21

Today should be a huge improvement on yesterday. If you have been feeling a little constrained by circumstances, then you should see certain restriction ease. It’s a day where something good could emerge out of nowhere. There’s a possible green light courtesy of incoming news too!

Today’s Numbers:   4, 11, 29, 36, 39, 44

CAPRICORN DAILY HOROSCOPE | Dec 22 – Jan 19

A more relaxed vibe is likely to reverse yesterday’s rather prickly mood and improve your social zone. You may well be inclined to operate at a slower pace when it comes to work. This will be fine if you’ve already done more than your fair share, but not if you haven’t!

Today’s Numbers:  8, 17, 23, 34, 41, 46

AQUARIUS DAILY HOROSCOPE | Jan 20 – Feb 18

Constructive influences may well open up the communication lines. If you can resist a slight restlessness for long enough to read the signs, you could glean something interesting and/or encouraging when it comes to the career front. However, it is a big if, given a potential romantic distraction!

Today’s Numbers: 2, 16, 24, 29, 32, 45

PISCES DAILY HOROSCOPE | Feb 19 – Mar 20

It’s a day where you’ll be somewhat immune from the more unpredictable vibe at large. It’s certainly not a bad strategy to give certain suggestions or proposals a great deal of thought. However, it may not be a good idea to try and impose control on a marginally disordered development later in the day!

West Ham’s women’s side can follow Leicester City’s example, says Kate Longhurst

West Ham were runners-up in last year’s Women’s FA Cup

Katie Longhurst says West Ham Women should take inspiration from Leicester’s exploits in the men’s game in order to challenge for trophies in women’s football.

Chelsea, Manchester City and Arsenal are dominant in top-tier women’s football, winning all 15 available domestic trophies between them over the last five seasons.

West Ham will start their third season as a WSL club with a brand new training ground at Chadwell Heath and have ambitions to succeed under managing director Jack Sullivan.

“We can’t just say they [Chelsea, Manchester City and Arsenal] have got more money so they’re going to be better than us. That’s not how it should work,” West Ham midfielder Longhurst told Sky Sports News.

“And if you look in the men’s game with Leicester they won the league. That can happen once in a blue moon, but now look at them they’re in the top four [and] they can strengthen their position.

“We have got a new training facility now and we want to be up there and Jack wants us to be a team that is challenging at the top.

“That might take a couple of years, or even a little bit more, but that is definitely something we are aiming for.”

West Ham have just completed the signing of Czech Republic international striker Katerina Svitkova, having already recruited Australian goalkeeper Mackenzie Arnold and 21-year-old full-back Maz Pacheco.

“I know Maz previously from playing with her at Liverpool but both are really nice girls. They’ve slotted in really well and hopefully they can strengthen us,” Longhurst added.

“We’ve got two really good goalkeepers now and they are going to have challenge each other [for a place in the team].

“Maz comes in with a little bit of experience but also youth and is a really good technical player as well, so I think she’ll be good for us.”

Exact Change Please: Walmart, Kroger, CVS Are Feeling The Coin Shortage

Coins have been in short supply around the country during the coronavirus pandemic.

Coins have been in short supply around the country during the coronavirus pandemic.

Stores around the country are struggling with an unexpected shortage. (No, not toilet paper — sorry, we’ve already made that joke.) They’re running low on coins.

Supermarkets and gas stations across the U.S. are asking shoppers to pay with a card or produce exact change. Walmart has converted some of its self-checkout registers to accept only plastic. Kroger is offering to load change that would normally involve coins onto loyalty cards. Some Wawa gas stations are accepting rolled coins in exchange for bills.

The trouble began weeks ago, when the coronavirus pandemic delivered a bizarre double-blow to the U.S. supply of quarters, dimes, nickels and even pennies. Social distancing and other safety measures slowed production of coins at the U.S. Mint. But also fewer coins made their way from customers to banks, coin-sorting kiosks and store cash registers as people holed up at home.

“The flow of coins through the economy … kind of stopped,” Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell told lawmakers in June.

That month, the Fed began rationing coins. Soon after, business groups — representing grocers, convenience stores, retailers, gas station operators and others — wrote to Powell and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin that the situation was an emergency.

“We were alarmed to hear that the system for distributing coins throughout the country is at the breaking point,” they wrote on June 23, offering a series of suggestions for how to fix it. A week later, the Fed announced it would convene a U.S. Coin Task Force to address the matter.

“Like most retailers, we’re experiencing the [effects] of the nationwide coin shortage,” a Walmart spokesperson wrote to NPR on Thursday. “We’re asking customers to pay with card or use correct change when possible if they need to pay with cash. Cash is welcome at all of our stores.”

A CVS representative said the company is “encouraging customers, if possible, to pay for their purchases using exact cash, credit/debit card or check” and working with banks to “minimize impact to our customers.”

“Like many retailers and businesses, we are adjusting to the temporary shortage in several ways while still accepting cash,” a Kroger spokesperson said in a statement, outlining various options customers are now offered instead of coin change.

One of those options — at both Kroger and Wawa — is a suggestion to round up shoppers’ amounts due to donate to charity.

LGBTQ-Inclusive Movies Rise As Racial Diversity Plummets, GLAAD Report Finds

0

Acclaimed films such as “Booksmart” and “Rocketman” made 2019 a banner year for LGBTQ representation in Hollywood. But a new survey finds that a lot more work needs to be done before on-screen parity can be achieved.

GLAAD on Thursday unveiled its 2020 “Studio Responsibility Index,” which examined 118 movies released by eight major studios, including The Walt Disney Studios, Paramount Pictures, Sony Pictures and Warner Bros. last year.

Of the surveyed films, 22 ― or 18.6% ― featured LGBTQ characters, a slight increase from 2018 (18.4%) and the highest figure in the eight-year history of the report.

Still, GLAAD executives expressed concern over two key findings. For the third year in a row, transgender characters were completely absent from all 118 films. And out of the LGBTQ characters presented, 34% were people of colour, down from 42% in 2018 and 57% in 2017.

“Despite seeing a record-high percentage of LGBTQ-inclusive films this year, the industry still has a long way to go in terms of fairly and accurately representing the LGBTQ community,” GLAAD President and CEO Sarah Kate Ellis said in an email. “If film studios want to stay relevant to today’s audiences and compete in an industry that is emphasising diversity and inclusion, then they must urgently reverse course on the diminishing representation of LGBTQ women and people of colour, as well as the complete absence of trans characters.”

As in previous years, the “Studio Responsibility Index” featured a five-point scale for ranking the output of individual studios released over the 2019 calendar year. Lionsgate, Paramount, United Artists Releasing and Universal Pictures received “insufficient” grades, while Sony and Disney were deemed “poor.” With no LGBTQ representation in any of its 2019 films, STX Entertainment received a “failing” grade.

GLAAD unveiled its inaugural “Studio Responsibility Index” in 2013 in hopes of “creating a barometer that will help move the needle forward on LGBTQ representation in film,” Ellis wrote in her introduction to this year’s report.

In spite of this year’s less-than-desirable results, officials challenged studios to include LGBTQ characters in 20% of their releases next year and aim for 50% in 2024. Noting the setbacks the COVID-19 pandemic has already imposed on the movie industry, GLAAD nonetheless expressed hope for a number of upcoming Hollywood releases such as “The Eternals” and “Happiest Season,” both of which are known to feature LGBTQ-inclusive narratives.

When it comes to LGBTQ representation on-screen, GLAAD research has repeatedly found that television ― rather than film ― has led the charge.

The results of last year’s edition of the group’s television-focused survey, “Where We Are on TV,” exceeded officials’ expectations as far as year-over-year diversification was concerned.

The Memorial: Tony Finau leads, Rory McIlroy and Tiger Woods off to good starts

The highs and lows (DJ!) from the oprning round of The Memorial Tournament at Muirfield Village, where Tony FInau sits atop a world-class leaderboard.

Tony Finau ended a high-scoring first day with the outright lead as Rory McIlroy and Tiger Woods both made encouraging starts to The Memorial Tournament.

With Muirfield Village playing substantially tougher than the relatively friendly set-up for last week’s Workday Charity Open on the same course, only 24 of one of the strongest fields in PGA Tour history managed to break par in the opening round.

Rory McIlroy and Tiger Woods made positive starts

Rory McIlroy and Tiger Woods made positive starts

But Finau showed contempt for the difficult conditions and carded nine birdies in a six-under 66 which earned him a one-stroke advantage over Ryan Palmer, with US Open champion Gary Woodland one further back alongside Brendan Steele.

McIlroy overcame a few errant tee shots to carve out a hard-working 70, with Woods started and finished with birdies as he returned a laudable 71 in his first competitive outing since hosting the Genesis Invitational five months ago.

But the star-studded field are looking upwards at Finau, who was level par after eight holes before making three straight birdies around the turn and adding two more at 14 and 15, although he did drop his third shot of the day when he blazed his tee shot to the short 16th way right of the target.

However, he responded with back-to-back birdie to close out the low round of the day, and he admitted he rode his luck at times, particularly when he got a favourable bounce after a misdirected shot at the 11th.

Finau carded nine birdies on the opening day

Finau carded nine birdies on the opening day

“I think I scored it about as good as I could,” he said. “I got some good breaks early on my back nine, mainly No 11 when I hit it left of the hazard and was able to get a clear lay-up there. I hit a second shot that landed on a sprinkler head and it jumped up next to the green and was able to make a birdie-four there.

“I think on a golf course like this in these conditions, it really forces you to think about every shot and stay in the present. Fast greens, tough pin locations, and then the wind – you’ve got to deal with the wind. Whenever you’re thinking about wind on a putt, you know it’s pretty tough.

Palmer managed to keep a bogey off his card and managed five birdies, including three in a row late in his round which lifted him into outright second ahead of Steele and Woodland who played 17 holes without a blemish only to stumble to his lone bogey of the day at the last, where he pushed his drive into the right rough and could not reach the green in two.

Jon Rahm, one of four players who could dethrone McIlroy as world No 1 this week, made a positive start with a three-under 69, with McIlroy among a large group of 10 players to on two under, a list which also features Jordan Spieth and defending champion Patrick Cantlay.

McIlroy admitted pre-tournament that he had struggled to stay focused without spectators in attendance, and that looked the case again early in his round as he found fairways hard to locate while dropping a shot when he bunkered his tee shot to the short fourth.

But he lifted his spirits with back-to-back birdies at six and seven only for another wayward drive to cost him another bogey at the ninth, and he had to scramble hard to save pars at 11 and 12 before holing from outside 20 feet for birdie at 13, and a sublime pitch to three feet at 15 from an awkward position in the rough set up his fourth birdie of the round.

Woods was happy with his first competitive round since February

Woods was happy with his first competitive round since February

The world No 1 parred safely in to ensure bragging rights over playing partners Woods and Brooks Koepka (70), with Woods unable to capitalise on a brilliant start which saw him birdie two of the first three holes.

The five-time champion gave both shots back at the sixth and eighth, and he offset a birdie at 15 with a bogey at 16 before finishing with a flourish, a solid iron to 15 feet at the last which he converted for birdie to end the day in red numbers.

Bryson DeChambeau appeared to be taking an odd line from the first tee at The Memorial, but his aim proved correct as he nailed a 423-yard drive, 49 yards longer than anyone else up to then!

Man of the moment Bryson DeChambeau opened with a disappointing 73, although he did thrill the viewers with some remarkable hitting which included drives measuring 407 yards (17th) and 423 yards at the first, where he reduced a tough 473-yard par-four to a drive and a flick with a wedge.

Former champion Justin Rose was two under with five to play, but he had a double-bogey and two bogeys down the stretch and slipped to one over along with reigning Open champion Shane Lowry, while Dustin Johnson four-putted the first to set the tone for an 80, and Rickie Fowler (+9) will also need something big on Friday just to make the weekend.

CVS Fined for Prescription Errors and Poor Staffing at Pharmacies

0

Pharmacists in dozens of states have accused CVS, Walgreens and other major pharmacy chains of putting the public at risk of medication errors because of poorly staffed and chaotic workplaces, The New York Times reported in January.

In letters to state pharmacy boards and in interviews with The Times, pharmacists said they struggled to keep up with an increasing number of tasks — filling prescriptions, giving flu shots, tending the drive-through, answering phones and calling patients — while racing to meet corporate performance metrics they characterized as excessive and unsafe.

The pharmacy chains, including CVS, have pushed back on employees’ complaints, saying staffing is sufficient and errors are rare.

Most state investigations focus on pharmacists, not conditions in their workplaces. In Oklahoma, the state board has begun investigating broader workplace issues when responding to complaints and doing routine inspections.

In mid-January, two board compliance officers went to a CVS in Bartlesville, Okla., to investigate a complaint of a mislabeled prescription. There, they “witnessed a chaotic scene including the phones ringing almost all of the time, along with constant foot traffic and drive thru traffic,” according to a complaint filed against CVS.

The officers discussed the error with the head pharmacist, noting that she said “she had lost a considerable amount of her support staff, and that the pharmacy was operating with little help, so she was not terribly surprised that an error could have occurred.”

In an audit, the officers found an error rate of nearly 22 percent, or 66 errors out of 305 prescriptions. Some of the mistakes were minor and would not affect a patient — such as the incorrect name of a prescribing physician — but others were more significant, like instructions for medications that were unclear or substantially different from what they should have been.

GOP Official Mocked For Tweet In Response To Elizabeth Warren’s Dog Joke

0

It’s been a challenging week for the director of the GOP’s rapid response team: He keeps tweeting things that make Democrats look good.

Earlier this week, Steve Guest had to delete a tweet about Joe Biden that attempted to connect the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee to the news that Washington, D.C.’s NFL team is changing its racist name.

But Guest’s attempt to tar the former vice president backfired when people pointed out that the image showed Biden behaving like a loving father― something few people have seen President Donald Trump do.

On Thursday, Guest tried to find another Democratic politician he could “own” and set his sights on Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren, who recently joked to a Biden strategist that her dog Bailey will be “voting Democrat” in November.

Where most people might see a light-hearted comment, Guest apparently saw a potential bounty of red meat he could feed Republicans:

“Elizabeth Warren endorses voter fraud, says her dog will be voting Democrat,” he tweeted, adding that “Voter fraud is not a joking matter.”

But based on the Twitter reactions, it looks like Guest, not Warren, is the one getting dogged by criticism.

Given that two of Guest’s attack tweets went horribly wrong this week, some people wondered if there might be something else at play.
