MONDAY, July 6, 2020 (HealthDay News) — Decades of progress against HIV, tuberculosis, malaria and other diseases worldwide are threatened by the diversion of resources on the coronavirus pandemic, the International AIDS Society says in a report to be published this week.
“The social distancing efforts and lockdowns to control the spread of it [coronavirus], have disrupted HIVprevention and treatment programs and put vital HIV research on hold,” Dr. Anton Pozniak, president of the International AIDS Society, said last week, CNN reported.
The society will outline its concerns during 23rd International AIDS conference, which began Monday.
A survey released in June by the Global Fund to fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria found that among the 106 countries the international financing nongovernmental organization works in, 85% had disruptions to HIV services, 78% to TB services, and 73% to malaria services, and nearly 20% had major disruptions in services for all three diseases, CNN reported.
These disruptions could result in more than 1 million extra deaths due to the three diseases, according to models by the World Health Organization, Imperial College London and Stop TB partnership.
MONDAY, July 6, 2020 (HealthDay News) — The new coronavirus can linger in indoor air and infect people, 239 scientists in 32 countries say in an open letter to the World Health Organization that challenges the WHO’s position on how the virus is spread.
The WHO says the virus is spread primarily by large respiratory droplets expelled by infected people in coughs and sneezes, but that those droplets fall quickly to the floor instead of remaining in the air, The New York Times reported.
But the scientists’ letter contends that much smaller exhaled droplets can travel the length of a room through the air and cause infection when they’re inhaled. They plan to publish their letter next week in a scientific journal.
If this type of airborne transmission plays a significant role in the pandemic, there are major implications, according to The Times. Masks may be required indoors, building ventilation systems may need to minimize recirculating air, ultraviolet lights may be required to kill airborne viral particles, and health care workers may need masks that filter out even the smallest respiratory droplets as they care for coronavirus patients.
However, the WHO’s technical lead on infection control said the evidence for the new coronavirus spreading in the air this way was unconvincing.
“Especially in the last couple of months, we have been stating several times that we consider airborne transmission as possible but certainly not supported by solid or even clear evidence,” said Dr. Benedetta Allegranzi, The Times reported. “There is a strong debate on this.”
MONDAY, July 6, 2020 (HealthDay News) — A warning about hand sanitizer products that contain methanol (wood alcohol), a substance often used to create fuel and antifreeze, has been issued by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
Methanol can be toxic when absorbed through the skin and life-threatening when ingested, and is not an acceptable active ingredient for hand sanitizer products, according to the FDA.
It said it’s seen an increase in hand sanitizer products that are labeled to contain ethanol (also known as ethyl alcohol) but that have tested positive for methanol.
State officials have reported recent harm among adults and children who ingested hand sanitizer products contaminated with methanol, including blindness, hospitalization and death, the FDA said.
Consumers who have hand sanitizers with methanol should immediately stop using them and dispose of the bottle in a hazardous waste container, if available, or dispose of as recommended by your local waste management and recycling center. Don’t flush or pour these products down the drain or mix with other liquids.
There is a list of FDA-tested and recalled hand sanitizers on the agency’s website.
“All Americans should practice good hand hygiene, which includes using alcohol-based hand sanitizer if soap and water are not readily available. Unfortunately, there are some companies taking advantage of the increased usage of hand sanitizer during the coronavirus pandemic and putting lives at risk by selling products with dangerous and unacceptable ingredients. Consumers and health care providers should not use methanol-containing hand sanitizers,” FDA Commissioner Dr. Stephen Hahn said in an agency news release.

Bryson DeChambeau hit the headlines for his power-hitting, his remarkable win in Detroit, but also some thoughtless comments on day three. David Livingstone asks, does he suffer from a lack of self-awareness?
There’s no doubt Bryson DeChambeau is great for golf and it’s equally certain that, when he’s thinking clearly, he’s grateful for how good the game’s been to him.
Bryson DeChambeau berated a cameraman during his third round
His win in Detroit on Sunday was an amazingly quick return on what he called the “long-term investment” in himself by eating and exercising his way to a new body and a more powerful golf swing.
Four weeks into golf’s restart, he’s capped three top-10 finishes with a victory, and his breathtaking performance in the final round of the Rocket Mortgage Classic turned a less-than-stellar event into box office magic.
The trouble is some of us watching would have been perfectly happy to see him fail following an incident on Saturday in which DeChambeau behaved like a pompous prat before telling us later that he was actually “not too bad of a dude.”
DeChambeau’s power-hitting has become the talk of the PGA Tour
That self-justifying whine prompted an unforgettable paragraph from Eamon Lynch of Golfweek USA Today when he wrote: “It’s one of life’s more reliable axioms that if a man has to tell you he’s a good dude, there’s a fair chance he is actually an insufferable gobshite.”
Not sure how that last word translated in the States but it most likely hit the target, and rightly so.
On Saturday, DeChambeau berated a television cameraman for continuing to focus on a temper tantrum after a bad bunker shot and although his poor behaviour was not shown on television, it was seen by an on-course journalist for the Golf Channel.

When asked about it later, the player talked about an invasion of privacy and the danger of “damaging our brand.”
He said: “I mean, I understand it’s his job to video me, but at the same point, I think we need to start protecting our players out here compared to showing a potential vulnerability and hurting someone’s image. I just don’t think that’s necessarily the right thing to do.”
The torrent of abuse that followed left DeChambeau with only one way of responding and that was to win emphatically on Sunday. In doing so, he hit the ball so far off the tee and continued trying to drive so many par fours, that he effectively “broke” Shotlink’s statistical summaries.

His comments after winning were interesting in that he didn’t see himself setting an example for his rivals to copy, more of a way of playing that might be adopted by a new generation.
Up until now, the top players have been fascinated by DeChambeau’s transformation but have shown little interest in going down the same route. Rory McIlroy, for one, believes he’s a better golfer when he’s lighter rather than heavier and others, like Rickie Fowler, have questioned when Bryson’s power might become counter-productive.
Their scepticism towards what they regard as a risky venture into the unknown underlines how bold and innovative DeChambeau has been and why he was so emotional on Sunday about his achievement.
Job done: DeChambeau wrapped up a three-shot win in Detroit
It’s a pity he didn’t, in that moment, take the chance to win over an army of new fans by apologising for his behaviour on Saturday, but perhaps the people around Bryson are too frightened to suggest anything that might “damage the brand” or at least hinder their own future as part of that brand.
If one of them could summon up the courage to spend some of the $1.3m DeChambeau won on Sunday to send him on a self-awareness course, they’d be doing more good for their champion’s image than any amount of weight training. Only then would Bryson understand the connection between the golf media and the millions of dollars pouring into his bank account.
Maybe he’d even understand that a television cameraman is not being judgemental by training his lens on a golfer behaving badly but just doing his job by offering a director pictures that tell a story.
DeChambeau has a win and six top-eight finishes from his last seven starts
He’d perhaps realise that the only person who can damage his image is himself. Having admitted that his behaviour in the bunker on Saturday was “dumb”, he might want to form another of golf’s “dumb and dumber” alliances (see Patrick Reed and caddie) with his equally gaff-prone pal Phil Mickelson.
Phil could, at least, teach Bryson how to apologise because he’s had to do it often enough and, of course, young Bryson is only 26. I’m sure many of us can remember how easy it was at that age to say the wrong thing at the wrong time and regret it later.
The trouble is he doesn’t seem to regret anything so far and the notion of apologising apparently hasn’t occurred to him. And let’s remember that this isn’t a first offence. He’s been quick to take umbrage in the past when commentators have quite reasonably questioned his slow play and his response to criticism is usually petulant.

Live on
I hope all of that changes, maybe even in the next couple of days, because Bryson DeChambeau deserves to be a popular hero in a sport that needs personalities who are larger than just their scorecard.
What’s more, his strength of mind in developing his own brave new world of golf doesn’t deserve to be undermined by his own thoughtlessness.
Following the reports of the gold seizure, the state IT department on Monday stated that it has terminated the service of Swapna Suresh who was working as an operational manager with the Kerala State IT Infrastructure Ltd.
Customs on Monday arrested a man, who claimed himself to be a former employee of foreign country’s consulate in Kerala, in connection with the seizure of gold worth over Rs 15 crore from a “diplomatic baggage” at an airport in the state.
The man was arrested following his interrogation in connection with the seizure of gold from the diplomatic baggage from Thiruvananthapuram international airport on Sunday, the Customs officials said.
Sarith Kumar, who claimed to be working with the Consulate as a PRO was taken into custody in connection with the seizure of gold.
Customs personnel on Sunday seized over 30 kg of gold that landed in “diplomatic baggage” by air cargo at the international airport here under the name of a person who enjoys diplomatic immunity.
On Monday, Customs personnel said they were looking for a woman, also claiming herself to be a former employee of the consulate in Thiruvananthapuram, in connection with the case.
Following the reports of the gold seizure, the state IT department on Monday stated that it has terminated the service of Swapna Suresh who was working as an operational manager with the Kerala State IT Infrastructure Ltd, one of the prestigious projects of the state.
“She was into a six-month contract and had ended already. However, she was continuing due to the COVID-19 and lockdown,” said the IT department. Earlier, Swapna Suresh had worked as executive secretary at the Consulate of United Arab Emirates at Thiruvananthapuram.
BJP state president K Surendran alleged that the gold smuggling racket has links with the office of Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, who holds the portfolio.
“The first call, as the smugglers were taken into custody by the customs, was from the chief minister’s office. Swapna Suresh has close contacts with S Shivsanakr, the Principal Secretary to the Chief Minister, who is also the IT Secretary,” he said.
The BJP leader also asked how a person like Swapna who was kicked out of the UAE Consulate could join the chief minister’s office in a key post. “The state special branch had informed CM about her background as she was questioned by the crime branch for forging documents in a case against an Air India official. However, he rejected all these,” he said.
Vijayan said he was unaware of the factors behind the appointment of the woman and would look into the matter.
“This was a major haul that happened in the Thiruvananthapuram International Airport. I would like to congratulate the Customs team that monitored the smuggling activity and seized the gold. It seems like they have details of those involved in the matter and the Customs will act soon,” Vijayan said.
Dismissing the BJP chief’s charge that the CMO was involved in the matter, Vijayan said his office had never entertained anyone involved in any sort of corruption and the people of the state know that.
He also said that those involved would not be able to escape and would be brought to justice.
Meanwhile, the UAE Embassy in India had stated it utterly condemns the attempted misuse of diplomatic channels by an individual engaged in smuggling activity.
“The Embassy firmly rejects such acts and unequivocally affirms that the mission and its diplomatic staff had no role in this matter,” it stated.
The UAE Embassy said the person, who was working as a PRO with the Consulate resigned from the job three months ago was fired for misconduct.

In a statement, the hospital confirmed the emergency department remained open, but visitors were being restricted.
“Due to a number of staff cases of coronavirus and quarantined close contacts in the emergency department, the hospital is operating reduced services and some ambulances are temporarily being diverted to other hospitals,†a spokesperson said.
“The emergency department will undergo continuous deep cleaning for the next two weeks and close contacts are being identified and quarantined.
“All staff in the emergency department are being tested as a precaution. People requiring urgent care should attend the emergency department, however, people with minor, less-urgent conditions should seek medical advice from their general practitioner in the first instance.
“Visitors to the hospital have also been further restricted as a precaution.â€

The Northern Hospital sits in the local government area of Whittlesea, where there are 36 active coronavirus cases.
The hospital also borders the City of Hume, which has the highest number of active cases in the state at 145.
It comes after Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews announced Tuesday afternoon a six-week Melbourne-wide lockdown.
Melburnians will only be allowed to leave their homes for four reasons — grocery shopping, care-giving, daily exercise, and school or work.
The stage-three restrictions will come into effect at 11.59pm Wednesday night.
Every Melbourne local government area will be effected, including Mitchell Shire in the city’s outer north.

A 42-year-old police officer was busted with an almighty consignment of illegal cigarettes this week after he crashed his car into a fence along the R81 near Mooketsi in Limpopo. Both he and his accomplice were arrested, and are set to appear in court on Tuesday.
Police spokesperson, Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo, said the local branch of SAPS had received reports of a sedan that had crashed the car on the evening of Sunday 5 July. Upon arriving at the scene, law enforcement officials found the cop and the 25-year-old passenger in possession of illicit cigarettes.
Limpopo cop arrested with enormous illegal cigarette haul in his car
As local publicationGiyani View reports, The suspects are expected to appear before Modjadjiskloof magistrates court on Tuesday 7 July 2020 to face the charges associated with their mega-haul. The sheer scale of this smuggling attempt was laid bare by Limpopo SAPS:
In total, 933 cartons of illegal cigarettes were discovered in the rear of the car.
Five loose packets were found in other areas of the vehicle.
The mega-stash of ciggies is estimated to be worth around R100 000.
Tobacco ban continues to encourage criminal behaviour
Lieutenant General Nneke Ledwaba is the Limpopo Provincial Commissioner of the South African Police Service. He has heaped praise on the arresting officers for acting in a professional manner to apprehend on of their colleagues, and Ledwaba has promised a course of ‘harsh action’ for the cop-turned-criminal.
The illegal cigarette trade is booming in South Africa, and for the criminals who don’t get caught, it can be a very lucrative industry indeed. On Monday, we saw SANDF release images of a smuggling operation they had managed to uncover, where illicit ciggies were transported over the Zimbabwe border in water containers. Both suspects in Limpopo are now facing counts of contravening the Disaster Management Act.
Florida’s education commissioner on Monday ordered schools to re-open for in-person instruction in August, even as coronavirus cases jam hospitals in the state.
According to an “emergency order†signed by Commissioner Richard Corcoran, public school districts and charter school boards must open all kindergarten through 12th-grade schools for at least five days a week. Although schools may also offer remote learning, parents must have the option to send their children to a brick and mortar school.Â
The order will only apply to the fall semester and may change if the pandemic becomes even more severe. Local health officials can override the commissioner’s order as well and close schools in emergencies.
A statement from the Classroom Teachers Association accused Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) of pushing a political and economic agenda over the safety and well-being of students, teachers and school employees.
“While we know that face-to-face learning is optimal, CTA will not support a reopening plan that could expose students, teachers or their families to illness, hospitalization or death,†the organization stated. “Lost academic time and lessons can be made up ― a life cannot.â€
To date, Florida has registered more than 206,000 confirmed cases of COVID-19 and 3,778 deaths.

The filter’s coating properties are optimised for efficient removal of sub-micron sized dust particles in the air, a press release from the institute said on Monday.
A nano-coated filter for healthcare workers treating COVID-19 patients has been developed by researchers at IIT-Madras.
The filter’s coating properties are optimised for efficient removal of sub-micron sized dust particles in the air, a press release from the institute said on Monday.
The nano-coating can be positioned according to the need to enhance surface/depth filtration for healthcare workers or public responders, professor K Arul Prakash of the Department of Applied Mechanics, IIT-Madras, said.
“The novel filter with multiple nano-coating can filter particles of the order of one micron size, which is a remarkable achievement,” he was quoted as saying in the release.
The use of the filter in face masks can enhance particle filtration efficiency. The filter can be used in respirator devices, air purification system in operation theatres, cabin air filters for the comfort and health of air passengers and air filters for armoured vehicle engines.
The work of developing the filter has been funded by the Defence Research Development Organisation (DRDO) and the nano-coated filter is in the process of being field tested in practical applications.
Upon validation through field trials, the filter would be recommended for mass manufacture through industry collaborations, the release added.
