Tucker Carlson Calls Protests Against Police Violence ‘A Form Of Tyranny’

Fox News host Tucker Carlson on Wednesday railed against protests in Minneapolis over the death of George Floyd, calling them “a threat to every American” and “a form of tyranny.”

The “Tucker Carlson Tonight” personality showed footage of the demonstrations against police brutality, which began peacefully on Tuesday but escalated into violence and looting in some areas. Protesters clashed with police, who were seen deploying tear gas and rubber bullets to disperse crowds.

Demonstrators were calling for justice in the death of Floyd, a 46-year-old Black man who died Monday after a police officer kneeled on his neck while he repeatedly said he couldn’t breathe.

“So that’s what rioting looks like,” Carlson announced. “It happened last night, as you can see, it’s happening right now.”

He insisted he wasn’t showing the videos to defend the behavior of Minneapolis police involved in Floyd’s death, but because he was calling out rioting and “defending society itself.”

“Ugly opinions, police brutality, officious birdwatchers, rude entitled ladies walking their dogs in big city parks ― all of that is bad, but none of it is nearly as bad as what you just saw,” he said.

“The indiscriminate use of violence by mobs is a threat to every American of all colors and backgrounds and political beliefs,” he continued, adding: “Democracy cannot exist when people are rioting. Rioting is a form of tyranny. The strong and the violent oppress the weak and the unarmed. It is oppression.”

Carlson, who routinely gives airtime to white nationalist talking points, also accused CNN of encouraging tensions by referring to “protesters,” not “rioters,” in its coverage. He claimed the network works hard to “fan racial resentment to make different groups distrust and hate one another.”

Carlson’s comments follow weeks of protests across the country from largely white groups ― with some armed with assault rifles and bearing Confederate flags and swastikas ― demanding governors lift stay-at-home orders imposed to mitigate the spread of the coronavirus that has now killed more than 100,000 people in the U.S.

Commentators have noted the markedly milder police reaction to those protests ― none saw police arrive in riot gear or disperse crowds with tear gas. By contrast, the police appeared from the outset in riot gear in Minneapolis, where protesters were unarmed.

“This is America. We’re allowed to disagree with what our leaders do however we like,” Carlson said of the anti-lockdown protests at the time. “And we’re allowed to express that disagreement in public. That’s our birthright.”

Carlson’s comments about Minneapolis were met with swift condemnation online.

Quadrivalent flu vaccine available for season start

IMO is seeking discussions with the HSE on the delivery of the population-based vaccines

The 2020/2021 influenza season is to commence in September and a vaccine is to be made available then, the Health Service Executive (HSE) has confirmed.

Quadrivalent influenza vaccine is to be supplied by the HSE for the 2020/21 influenza season.

The flu clinics are to adhere to the Covid-19 Health Protection Surveillance Centre (HPSC) national guidance for relevant healthcare settings. This guidance is being developed and updated on an ongoing basis, adds the HSE.

The Irish Medical Organisation (IMO) is seeking to hold discussions with the HSE about the delivery of population-based vaccines for the flu season later this year.

While Dr Tony Cox, Medical Director of the Irish College of General Practitioners said: “The planning for the winter flu vaccination season is the responsibility of public health. The Irish College of General Practitioners will liaise with public health on the rollout of vaccinations in the coming months.”

According to the HSE, the flu vaccine is to be administered by a spectrum of healthcare professionals including GPs, pharmacists, and occupational health.

Ireland switched over to egg-based quadrivalent vaccines from trivalent vaccines last year for the 2019/20 flu season.

The World Health Organization recommendation for the composition for the Northern Hemisphere 2020/21 flu vaccine has been backed by the European Medicines Agency.

The recommendation for the composition of the egg-based quadrivalent vaccine for 2020/21 influenza season is an A/Guangdong-Maonan/SWL1536/2019 (H1N1)pdm09-like virus; an A/Hong Kong/2671/2019 (H3N2)-like virus; a B/Washington/02/2019 (B/Victoria lineage)-like virus; and a B/Phuket/3073/2013 (B/Yamagata lineage)-like virus.

For the 2020 flu season, free vaccination has been extended, the vaccination to all children aged from two to 12 years inclusive. All of those in the HSE-defined at-risk groups, aged from six months to 69 years inclusive are eligible to access the vaccine without charge. All persons older than 70 already have access without charges.

During the week, May 11 to 17, no deaths in notified influenza cases were reported to the HPSC.

During the 2019/2020 season to date, 104 deaths have been reported to the HPSC in notified influenza cases, according to the latest “Influenza Surveillance in Ireland – Weekly Report”.

Beware of bankrupt stocks like JCPenney and Hertz

0

Hertz and JCPenney are two of the most high profile publicly traded companies to file for Chapter 11 protection since the Covid-19 pandemic hit the United States. They have plenty of company.
But investors should reconsider if they think that now might be the time to do some bargain hunting with shares of bankrupt companies. After all, Hertz (HTZ) and JCPenney (JCP) were struggling long before the coronavirus arrived.
Sure, there are firms like GM (GM) as well as Delta (DAL), American (AAL) and several other airlines that wound up getting a second life from investors after bankruptcy wiped their balance sheets clean in years past. But that was after investors who held shares in the old bankrupt companies got wiped out.

When it comes to getting paid back in Chapter 11 reorganization, shareholders are lowest on the totem pole. The companies’ creditors, who can include everyone from bondholders to suppliers, get higher priority.

Also, a company that seeks bankruptcy protection has probably done so due to its poor business decisions or because it’s no longer relevant to consumers. It’s about more than just a mounting debt load.

Bankruptcy may only temporarily solve a company’s problems

Take a look at Pier 1 (PIRRQ). The long-struggling retailer filed for bankruptcy in February and plans to close all of its 541 stores for good. Shares of Pier 1 plunged 75% to just above $1 a share on the day of its filing. They now trade for less than 7 cents.
Pier 1 wants to close all its stores for good
And ask any investors who’ve stuck with Sears since its Chapter 11 filing in October 2018 how bankruptcy that worked out.
Sears (SHLDQ) was trading around 41 cents when it filed for bankruptcy and briefly shot as high as $2.77 per share after it emerged from Chapter 11 in February 2019. But the stock has fallen nearly 60% in the past year to about 17 cents.

Even newly issued shares of formerly bankrupt companies often struggle to prosper after emerging from Chapter 11. After all, a healthier balance sheet doesn’t mean that a company has a better business model — especially in the notoriously cutthroat retail sector.

American Apparel, Fairway, Barneys and RadioShack are just a few examples of what some have dubbed Chapter 22 companies — firms that all were forced to file for bankruptcy a second time within a few years after emerging from a previous reorganization.

And then there’s camera and film company Eastman Kodak, the one-time tech and consumer giant that was a Dow component from 1930 to 2004, until it took too long to get aboard the digital photo revolution.

It filed for bankruptcy in 2011, wiping out the value of its shareholders. While a revamped Eastman Kodak (KODK) made a return to Wall Street with new stock in 2013, its shares have plunged 90% since then.

So while active traders may have the cash, and the stomach, to try to take advantage of short-term swings in bankrupt stocks like Hertz and JCPenney, long-term investors should probably think twice.

Kany García made her new music album out of ‘necessity to stay connected’ in quarantine

Latin Grammy-winning artist Kany García never imagined she would compose her seventh studio album in the middle of a global pandemic.

“We did this album with zero planning,” the Puerto Rican singer-songwriter told NBC News in Spanish.

García said she was in an apartment in Miami “doing nothing, locked up, but at the same time receiving calls from colleagues who would tell me ‘hey, let’s do a podcast together’ or ‘hey Kany, how are you? I’m here in Spain and this is horrible,'” referring to the impact of the coronavirus in the European country.

It was during those calls “when we shared how powerless we felt under our new reality,” that García found herself writing new songs and sharing those with her colleagues. And suddenly, she had ten songs, all collaborations with beloved Latin artists such as Colombian musicians Carlos Vives and Camilo as well as fellow Puerto Rican singer Pedro Capó and Chilean artist Mon Laferte, among several others.

All the songs García composed while staying at home, riding out the pandemic, will finally exit the quarantine they’ve been living in for the past couple of months, released on Thursday as part of her latest album “Mesa Para Dos,” Spanish for “Table For Two.”

“It was kind of a beautiful madness and I told myself if I don’t release these now that we’re living this reality, with these feelings, I don’t know if when we reopen in November or October I will be able to release this album, in this way,” she said. “It made sense to me today.”

While somewhat unintentionally, “Mesa Para Dos” truly captures the ways in which people have changed how they express love, distress, powerlessness, strength and vulnerability during the pandemic.

“During this quarantine, I’ve struggled a lot with keeping my mood up in the best possible way,” said García. “And in a way, these songs came to rescue me.”

The music video for the single “Lo Que En Ti Veo” (What I See In You) features gentle scenes of García alongside her partner, Jocelyn Troche, stuck at home as well as vignettes of Nahuel Pennisi, a young acoustic guitarist and troubadour.

In a way, the songs also came to rescue the artists who collaborated with her, said Garcia while recalling how her song “Date La Vuelta” (Turn Around) came to be. Jesús Navarro, the lead vocalist of the Mexican pop band Reik, was in New York when the state “was going through a very complicated time.”

“Being able to tell him, ‘hey, I’m here making music’ and him saying, ‘let me see, let me hear it,’ and little by little, it was like the collaborations became a necessity to stay connected,” said García.

Producing an album during quarantine also “took away the artists’ glamour and we see them in their most vulnerable states, wanting to make songs that respond to the reality Latin America is living,” she said.

This becomes apparent in the song “Acompáñame” (Accompany Me), a sort of revolutionary anthem reminiscent of some of the historic mass protests seen across Latin America. “Cacerolazo” protests — consisting of the banging of pots and pans — echoed in countries such as Chile, Colombia, Bolivia and Venezuela last year in response to unrest over weak political systems. In the Caribbean, Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic saw unprecedented mass protests take place over the past year.

García said “Acompáñame” — a collaboration with Goyo, the lead female vocalist of the Colombian hip hop group ChocQuibTown, and Cata of Colombian musical ensemble Monsieur Periné — was the “most difficult one to do” because both women lived in “two completely different realities.”

“One of them had an entire recording studio in her house and the other one had absolutely nothing, not even WiFi, and she recorded the song with a cellphone, and they recorded with so much desire to be part of this song,” she said. “It was also a complicated song because we were trying to recreate masses of people that weren’t there with three people… . Banging pots and pans, doing chants, all the choruses. But we all really wanted to do that song that is so necessary because , in reality, we often go to marches and we don’t have songs that can accompany us, as the song is called.”

As “more and more people are protesting out of necessity,” said García, who joined Puerto Rico’s mass protests triggered by a political scandal last year, “we must find new ways to protest and not wait until we have to go out to the streets, as our only resource… . I believe that we must also reinvent ourselves, in the things we believe in, because we must continue fighting for them and use social media until others hear our voices.”

While García misses her fans and being on stage, “being able to release a record at a time like this and give people music, already seems like a privilege to me.”

Until she’s able to “return to the shouting and hugging on stage,” García will be hosting “Mesa Para Dos” events via livestream, where she will have a talk with one of the album’s collaborators.

“People are looking for new music to listen to something that somehow helps normalize what we’re going through,” said García. “That’s what excites me the most.”

EasyJet shares rise despite job cuts, as Covid-19 optimism lifts stocks – business live

We realise that these are very difficult times and we are having to consider very difficult decisions which will impact our people, but we want to protect as many jobs as we can for the long-term.

We remain focused on doing what is right for the company and its long-term health and success, following the swift action we have taken over the last three months to meet the challenges of the virus. Although we will restart flying on 15 June, we expect demand to build slowly, only returning to 2019 levels in about three years’ time.

Against this backdrop, we are planning to reduce the size of our fleet and to optimise the network and our bases. As a result, we anticipate reducing staff numbers by up to 30% across the business and we will continue to remove cost and non-critical expenditure at every level. We will be launching an employee consultation over the coming days.

We want to ensure that we emerge from the pandemic an even more competitive business than before, so that easyJet can thrive in the future.

Townsville’s Queensland Country Bank stadium will host just its second ever NRL game tomorrow night, as the North Queensland Cowboys and Gold Coast Titans prepare to do battle.

But before players step foot onto the new turf, its been all systems go cleaning and disinfecting.

“There’s a lot we haven’t had to worry about but obviously making sure all of the players and the staff, contractors that are here are safe we have had to spend a lot of time working other initiatives,” Venue Manager, Mirella Taylor said.

High-touch areas are being disinfected frequently ahead of the game. (9News)
segregated walkways to keep players away from officials. (9News)

Cleaning regimes have ramped up, with both changing rooms off limits, only player and club staff allowed into the zone.

“It’s regular disinfecting of those high touch points like door handles, rails lifts etc.”

With all live sport taking a 2-month hiatus, footy fans have been missing their favourite players, but for Queensland Country Bank Stadium Grounds Manager, Bruce Fouracre it hasn’t been so sombre.

All door handles are being wiped down too. (9News)

“It’s just been good having the whole ground to myself and not having to worry about footballers ripping it up anything like that”

The Titans will fly into Townsville tomorrow.
