Nickelodeon went off the air for almost 9 minutes to support equality and share a “Declaration of Kids’ Rights”

Kid’s television channel Nickelodeon showed solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement on Monday by stopping traditional programming for nearly nine minutes. During the scheduled interruption, the channel broadcasted a message to children and families regarding mutual respect—an acknowledgement of the protests over police brutality and racial inequality that are happening throughout the United States.

“Nickelodeon is going off the air for 8 minutes and 46 seconds in support of justice, equality and human rights,” the message read. The off-air time started at 6 p.m. ET on Monday.

The network also used its airwaves to share a “Declaration of Kids’ Rights.” Some viewers captured the moment on video and shared the message online via Twitter; the “Declaration” was also posted on Nickelodeon’s Facebook page.

Nickelodeon’s “Declaration of Kids’ Rights” asserts that children should be treated equally regardless of the color of their skin and that they have a right to their own opinions. The full text reads as follows:

You have the right to be seen, heard and respected as a citizen of the world.

You have the right to a world that is peaceful.

You have the right to be treated with equality, regardless of the color of your skin.

You have the right to be protected from harm, injustice, and hatred.

You have the right to an education that prepares you to run the world.

You have the right to your opinions and feelings, even if others don’t agree with them.

The network also apparently aired another, more provocative message that explicitly references the late George Floyd, the man whose recent death in police custody inspired the ongoing protests. That message features white text that reads “I CAN’T BREATHE” in all caps against a black background; the message runs for almost nine minutes and features audio of someone breathing. The text and the run time are both clearly intended to recognize the final words and moments of Floyd, who died after a white police officer knelt on his neck for nearly nine minutes. This broadcast aired on all Viacom channels, including Nickelodeon, MTV, VH1, Comedy Central and TV Land, according to Fast Company.

In addition, MTV told Newsweek the company partnered with Color of Change.

Social media users are split regarding the decision to air such a serious and emotional message on a children’s channel. Some seemed offended by the decision, while others applauded Nickelodeon for trying to start a conversation among families.

“This had me standing up. Especially the ‘I can’t breathe’ ad. Thank you for doing this,” wrote Rachel Gardiner on Nickelodeon’s Facebook post. “This IS the right platform. This is a scary time and riots are everywhere; we need to discuss these things with our children and they need to know about equality and their rights.”

A Twitter user had an opposing viewpoint. “It’s beyond wrong that was on a children’s channel. That pushing death onto young children, it could be scaring,” claimed @F1reFlow3r.”

Newsweek reached out to Nickelodeon for comment on the decision to go off the air for these two messages, but was informed that the network’s offices are currently closed to respect Blackout Tuesday. Nickelodeon is also practicing Blackout Tuesday on their social media accounts. This article will be updated with any further comments from Nickelodeon, if they come in once the network’s offices are open again.

Intel: US returns acquitted Iranian scientist, no apparent prisoner swap

Jun 2, 2020

The United States has returned an acquitted Iranian scientist to his home country after holding him for months in an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facility, the Associated Press reported on Tuesday. Both Washington and Tehran shot down rampant speculation that the United States had detained Sirous Asgari despite his acquittal on sanctions evasion charges in November to secure the release of Americans detained by Iran.

“Speculation about an exchange of Asgari for other individuals is not accurate,” said Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Abbas Mousavi. “His freedom came about based on his acquittal from charges.”

Asgari contracted COVID-19 in April while in the ICE facility.

Why it matters:  Acting Deputy Secretary of Homeland Security Ken Cuccinelli rebutted Iranian claims that the United States was holding Asgari as leverage in a potential prisoner swap in remarks to the Associated Press. Cuccinelli said that the United States had tried to return Asgari in December following his acquittal but that Tehran had refused to recognize him as an Iranian citizen, failing to provide him a passport until late February. He went on to explain that once Asgari received his passport, multiple flights booked to return him to Iran were cancelled because of the coronavirus pandemic.

What’s next:  Asgari is expected to finally arrive in Iran on Wednesday. Iran still retains four known jailed Americans: Michael White, Siamak Namazi, Baquer Namazi and Morad Tahbaz.

Know more:  A US-Iran prisoner swap may not be immediately in the cards, but Iranian Foreign Mininster Mohammad Javad Zarif nonetheless called for one as recently as last month. And Laura Rozen has the details on last year’s prisoner-swap agreement between the United States and Iran.

Pelvic Fractures – Injuries and Poisoning – Merck Manuals Consumer Version

0

When people have been in a major accident are taken to an emergency department, serious injuries must be treated as soon as possible. If bleeding is severe, steps must be taken immediately to stop the bleeding. People usually need to be admitted to a hospital.

Minor, stable pelvic fractures typically heal without causing permanent disabilities. Surgery is rarely needed, but bed rest may be needed. However, bed rest should be for as short a time as possible. Pain relievers (analgesics) can help relieve pain enough so that people can walk. To avoid the weakness, stiffness, and other complications that occur with bed rest, people should walk, stand, and put their full weight on the joint as soon as possible, even if they can do so only for a short time. Trying to walk does not injure the area further. Most people can walk short distances without a walker by 1 week and can walk without aid and with only mild discomfort in 1 to 2 months.

If bleeding continues, embolization or pelvic packing may be done:

Other injuries are treated as needed.

Confederate Statue Taken Down In Virginia

A Confederate statue in Virginia has been removed by officials, as protests sparked by the police killing of George Floyd and demanding an end to systemic racism continued in the state and across the nation.

“Alexandria, like all great cities, is constantly changing and evolving,” Alexandria Mayor Justin Wilson said on Twitter Tuesday morning. The city, known for its Old Town community with architecture that harkens back to Colonial days, is a Washington suburb.

The statue of a Confederate soldier was placed prominently at the intersection of Old Town in 1889. More from The Washingtonian:

The Caspar Buberl statue, called Appomattox, has stood at the intersection of South Washington and Prince Streets since 1889, a location chosen because it was where many Confederate soldiers gathered to leave for war. The city, which stopped flying Confederate flags five years ago, has since hoped to get rid of the monument to its Confederate past, a task complicated by a Virginia law that protected it. Governor Ralph Northam signed a law this April that allows cities to remove Confederate monuments. It will go into effect July 1. Alexandria renamed its portion of Route 1, formerly called Jefferson Davis Highway, last year.

Wilson told the publication the city had been in talks with the United Daughters of the Confederacy about the statue’s removal. The UDC pushed for the placement throughout Southern states of hundreds of statues honoring the Confederacy and its leading figures, starting in the 1890s. The group was a leader in efforts to rewrite history, romanticizing the treatment of slaves prior to the Civil War and promoting the false narratives that slavery wasn’t the prime cause of the conflict, even framing the Confederacy as a non-racist institution. That simply isn’t true.

As the nationwide protest erupted last week following the death of Floyd in Minneapolis as he was in police custody, the UDC headquarters in Richmond, Virginia ― the capital of the Confederacy ― was set on fire. Firefighters successfully extinguished the blaze.

In Alabama, protestors converged on a 115-year-old Confederate monument from a public park in Birmingham on Sunday to take it down. Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin showed up and urged protestors to leave it alone, saying he would have the city tear it down instead.

“I understand the frustration and the anger that you have,” Woodfin said. “Allow me to finish the job for you.”

It wasn’t immediately clear when the Birmingham monument would be removed.

George Floyd protests LIVE updates: Donald Trump threatens Black Lives Matter protesters with US military as unrest continues to grip America

But Biden stepped up his criticism of Trump as he works to elevate his voice in the national debate – after more than two months of the campaign for the White House being frozen amid the outbreak of the coronarvius.

“This President today is part of the problem and accelerates it,” Biden said, adding that Trump is “consumed with his blinding ego”.

Biden’s criticism comes a day after Trump threatened the nation’s governors that he would deploy the military to states if they did not stamp out violent protests over police brutality that have roiled the nation.

Authorities under federal command later forced back peaceful demonstrators in Washington with tear gas so the President could walk to nearby church St John’s Church and pose briefly with a Bible. The church had sustained damage during Sunday protests.

Biden noted that “peaceful protesters” were dispersed from the “doorstep of the people’s house, the White House” using tear gas and flash grenades to stage what he called a “photo op” publicity stunt.

“The President held up a Bible,” Biden added. “I just wished he opened it once in a while instead of brandishing it.”

The 20-plus minute address was covered live by US cable networks and Biden used it to declare, “This job’s not about me. It’s about you. It’s about us”.

“Look, the presidency is a big job. Nobody will get everything right. And I won’t either,” Biden said, but promised, “I won’t fan the flames of hate”.

Indonesia Cancels Hajj Pilgrimage, Citing Risks Of Travel During Pandemic

Indonesia, home to more Muslims than any country in the world, is canceling this year’s hajj pilgrimage to holy sites in Saudi Arabia, saying the health and safety of travelers would be at risk during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Our religion teaches us that saving lives is an obligation. That is the consideration in this policy,” Minister of Religious Affairs Fachrul Razi said Tuesday during a news conference in Jakarta.

The decision comes weeks before the first group of pilgrims was slated to leave Indonesia to begin their journey to the Saudi cities of Mecca and Medina.

But Mecca, Islam’s holiest city, is currently under a 24-hour curfew because of the coronavirus, and it’s expected to remain so until at least June 21.

Saudi Arabia currently has nearly 90,000 confirmed cases of COVID-19, while Indonesia has just over 27,500, according to data compiled by Johns Hopkins University.

In a normal year, Saudi Arabia sets quotas for millions of pilgrims based on their country of origin. But the kingdom has not yet announced whether it will allow visitors for this year’s hajj, and it canceled most international travel in March because of the coronavirus.

“Indonesia, which has the largest quota of haj pilgrims in the world, initially planned to send up to 221,000 people for the annual Muslim tradition,” The Jakarta Post reports.

With uncertainty lingering over this year’s hajj, there wouldn’t be enough time to process visas, coordinate flights and also enforce mandatory 14-day quarantines for pilgrims, the Ministry of Religious Affairs says.

Indonesia’s decision to cancel the pilgrimage applies to all Indonesian citizens, whether or not they were planning to travel for the hajj under the government’s official quota, Razi said.

Why this photo is bricking some Android phones

Dozens of Android phone owners are reporting on social media that a picture featuring a lake, a cloudy sunset and a green shoreline is crashing their handsets when used as wallpaper.

Several brands seem to be affected, including Samsung and Google’s Pixel.

The bug makes the screen turn on and off continuously. In some cases a factory reset is required.

The BBC does not recommend trying it out.

Samsung is due to roll out out a maintenance update on 11 June. The BBC has contacted Google for comment but not yet had a response.

A tweet on the issue has had thousands of likes and re-tweets, with some reporting that their phone has also been affected.

Tech journalist Bogdan Petrovan at Android Authority said the bug did not affect his Huawei 20 Pro but it did cause a Google Pixel 2 to malfunction.

“After setting the image in question as a wallpaper, the phone immediately crashed. It attempted to reboot, but the screen would constantly turn on and off, making it impossible to pass the security screen,” he noted.

Restarting the device in safe mode (by holding down the volume button during boot-up) did not fix the issue.”

It appears to affect some but not all devices running the latest version of the Android operating system, Android 10.

The launch event for Android 11 was due to take place this week but has been postponed.

There has not yet been an official reason given for the bug but developer Dylan Roussel, who writes at 9to5Google tweeted his theory.

Ken Munro and Dave Lodge from security firm Pen Test partners also analysed it for the BBC.

“As digital photographs have improved in quality, phones need to check what the image ‘colour space’ is to work out how to display it properly,” they said.

“It’s how a phone knows how to display exactly the right shade of green, for example.

“There are different ways of defining the colour space. Some spaces have specialist uses in graphic design, so sometimes you’ll see images that aren’t in the usual ‘Standard RGB’ format. It’s also possible to deliberately create images that have more colour information than some devices can handle.

“What’s happened here is that the way some phones deal with these cases has gone wrong.

“The phone crashes because it doesn’t know how to deal with it correctly, and the software developers probably hadn’t considered this might happen.”

For This Tribe, Saving a River Means Saving the Sturgeon

As an adult, Ms. Miller earned a degree in fisheries resources at the University of Idaho. She spent time working in other tribal, state and commercial hatcheries along the basin, juggling her work in conservation with the responsibilities of caring for her family.

“Our natural resources are sacred to us,” she said. “It’s up to us to oversee them.”

But although leaders of the Yakama and Lummi nations have called for the removal of three dams on the Columbia, Ms. Miller instead sidesteps the issue.

She considers the dams the greatest threat to the sturgeon habitat — along with pollution, climate change and urbanization — but has sought out a workaround. By releasing the 3,000 sturgeon as juveniles, rather than babies, she is bypassing the earliest part of their life cycle, when they are most vulnerable to predators.

“This is sovereignty in action,” said Paul Ward, the program manager of the Yakama Nation Fisheries, speaking of intertribal white sturgeon recovery efforts across the basin. “This is taking control of our future.”

Protecting the river system is part of her heritage, and her national connection to natural resources. Her great-grandfather and great-great-grandfather, both chiefs, were part of a group that spoke out against the construction of the Bonneville Dam. She keeps a photograph of them above her desk.

It is also part of her family trauma. Her grandfather was forced into a boarding school, away from the Columbia. When he came back, he no longer spoke Yakama. She grew up hunting and fishing, but finds traditional species fewer and farther between. Her children do not know the taste of some foods she grew up eating.

“We’re still here and still doing this work,” Ms. Miller said. “These animals, these fish, they give their lives to sustain us. It’s our responsibility to protect them.”
