A young woman whose lungs were destroyed beyond repair by the novel coronavirus received a new set of lungs at Chicago’s Northwestern Memorial Hospital last week, her doctors announced Thursday. It’s reportedly the first time a COVID-19 patient in the U.S. has undergone a double lung transplant.
Dr. Ankit Bharat, who performed the surgery, told reporters that the woman — who is in her 20s and had no serious underlying medical conditions prior to contracting COVID-19 — had some of the most damaged lungs he’d ever seen.
The virus had left her lungs full of holes and “completely plastered to tissue around them, the heart, the chest wall and diaphragm,†Bharat told The New York Times.
Without the transplant, the woman — who spent almost two months on a ventilator and heart-lung machine before the surgery — would have died, he said. Â
For the first time, surgeons at @NorthwesternMed performed a double-lung transplant on a patient whose lungs were damaged by COVID-19 “A lung transplant was her only chance for survival,†says Dr. Ankit Bharat, chief of thoracic surgery.@WGNNewspic.twitter.com/AMBBkkscvU
Bharat said the 10-hour operation, which took place last Friday, was more challenging and took longer than usual because of how damaged the woman’s lungs were. Still, the transplant was a success, he said, and the patient ― though still on a ventilator ― was recovering well.
“Yesterday she smiled and told me just one sentence,†Bharat said, according to the Chicago Tribune. “Thank you for not giving up on me.â€

Doctors have hailed the lung transplant as an “important development†in the fight against COVID-19.
Though not a suitable treatment option for all patients, lung transplants could be an option for some ― particularly younger patients with minimal underlying health conditions who sustain irreversible lung damage because of the virus, Bharat said. As The Associated Press noted, a handful of COVID-19 survivors in China and Europe have successfully received new lungs.Â

Bharat said other medical centers around the country have reached out to find out more about the procedure.Â
“This is an important development that could help a number of patients who have sustained severe and irreversible lung damage as a result of COVID-19,†he said, according to the Tribune.

Over the past few weeks, Disney has announced plans to reopen its U.S. theme parks in phases starting this summer. The reopening date for Walt Disney World in Florida is July 11, while California’s Disneyland is due to welcome guests on July 17.
These plans have prompted criticism, with thousands of people even signing a petition urging further delay to protect Disneyland’s workers and guests. But the company says it is taking measures to promote health and safety, including reduced capacity, temperature checks and mask requirements.
How effective these procedures will be in preventing the spread of the coronavirus has yet to be determined. But what we do know is that the theme park experience will be different in the age of COVID-19.
HuffPost asked hospitality experts and Disney park fanatics to share what they predict visiting Walt Disney World and Disneyland will be like this summer, based on the announced safety measures and their own informed speculation.
“I would guess some of these changes will take some getting used to, but I also suspect most guests will be understanding and have patience as the industry prepares to operate with new conditions,†said Carissa Baker, an assistant professor at the University of Central Florida’s Rosen College of Hospitality Management. “For some, though, it will be strange for an essentially social experience to have required distancing and a lack of the smiles synonymous with Disney. â€
What will these changes be like? Read on for the experts’ forecasts.
The parks will feel emptier.
“If I had to pick one thing that guests will notice immediately, it’s the reduced size of the number of people in the parks,†said Scott Smith, an associate professor at the University of South Carolina’s College of Hospitality, Retail and Sports Management. “Disney will be limiting their park capacity to help reduce the crowd effect.â€
Disney has indicated that fewer guests will be admitted to the U.S. parks to allow for social distancing, but has not revealed the specifics. When Shanghai Disneyland reopened in early May, the Chinese government limited the number of visitors to 24,000 per day, less than a third of the park’s capacity prior to the pandemic. Disney Springs ― a retail, dining and entertainment complex at Walt Disney World ― also began a phased reopening on May 20 with capacity limits.

Individual facilities and attractions will also have lower capacity limits to cut down on crowding. Fireworks, parades and shows, which tend to draw large crowds, have been suspended.
“Truth be told, I am excited about the reduced crowds,†said Kathleen Wolfe, a Disney travel specialist and founder of Get Down to Disness. “I’ve been visiting the theme parks for many years, and each year the ‘slow periods’ have gotten fewer and fewer. So selfishly, I will admit the elbow room walking down Main Street USA is going to feel pretty great.â€
Technology will play a bigger role.
The pandemic has prompted many companies to explore new technology to reduce opportunities for disease transmission. Walt Disney World, which already has a robust app and online planning service with My Disney Experience, has announced a new reservation system for entry into the park. Guests won’t be able to buy admission at the gate.
“I do think that Disney may use more virtual queues and more smartphone integration,†predicted AJ Wolfe, founder of the Disney Food Blog. “Virtual queues have been used in Galaxy’s Edge on both coasts, and while they could be changed slightly to be more efficient (right now, the ride opportunities sell out first thing in the morning on both coasts for Rise of the Resistance), the model is there. Also, I think Disney parks notifications and trip planning may become even more a part of the official apps for Disney World and Disneyland.â€
Other ways to cut down on person-to-person contact and high-touch surfaces include mobile menus and contactless payment.
“We hope to see mobile ordering expanded to all quick-service locations with multiple payment methods, along with a bag X-ray process instead of a hands-on bag check,†said the team behind the Tips from the Disney Divas & Devos blog. “The new ability to chat through My Disney Experience should save a lot of time not having to go to the front desk.â€
“I have seen some mention that these virtual services make visits less spontaneous, but I would argue that there are many guests who have been hyper-planning their vacations for decades and that these tools assist them.â€
– Carissa Baker, an assistant professor at the University of Central Florida’s Rosen College of Hospitality Management
On the other hand, the FastPass+ system will no longer be in use, so guests can’t make reservations for individual rides. Kathleen Wolfe noted that Walt Disney World could take the opportunity to overhaul the system, which she believes has a number of issues. She hopes that the park will adopt Disneyland’s paid MaxPass system (and that Disneyland will implement the ticketless MagicBand technology used at Disney World).
“I have seen some mention that these virtual services make visits less spontaneous, but I would argue that there are many guests who have been hyper-planning their vacations for decades and that these tools assist them,†said Baker. “It is true that those who did not utilize these tools will now have to, but it was trending that way anyway. For instance, the only way to ride the new blockbuster attraction Rise of the Resistance was to obtain a boarding group through the app once inside the park.â€
New health and safety procedures will be implemented.
“Some of the most noticeable changes in the U.S. will relate to safety procedures,†said Baker, noting that guests will have to undergo temperature checks upon entry to the parks. She also foresees more frequent cleanings, hand sanitizer stations and plexiglass at points of sale.
“After seeing and hearing what stores are having to go through just to reopen when it comes to sanitary conditions and post-consumer wipe-downs of merchandise and other products, I am really wondering how they are going to handle guests touching each attraction vehicle or even the queues,†said Jeff Reitz, an Air Force veteran who had visited Disneyland every day since 2011 until its March closure. “I am looking forward to going back … if just to check things out and see just how everything is going to be handled. I just read in The Hollywood Reporter how movie theaters can start opening this Friday, and they were mentioning using disposable seat covers to help with guest turnover.â€
Several experts who spoke to HuffPost said they think the Disney parks will keep temperature checks and enhanced cleaning procedures in place until there’s a coronavirus vaccine. A writer for the Tips from the Disney Divas & Devos blog, who goes by Allergy Mom Diva (her children have food allergies), said she’s “very excited†about the increased focus on cleanliness and sanitation.
“I’m constantly worried about any food particles that other guests may have left on tables, railings and attractions,†she said. “I will gladly take a little longer wait time for meals or attractions if it means things are being cleaned more often, which means my kids are safer.â€
“Disney usually errs on the side of caution, so I see them being required until government officials relax those suggested guidelines,†said Smith, noting that he has heard the parks will strictly enforce this policy.

Masked people visit Shanghai Disneyland after its reopening on May 11, 2020.
“I believe Disney will use the need for masks as an opportunity to sell additional themed merchandise as they do with most everything else (i.e., hats, shirts, ice cream bars),†he added. “Guests are always eager to have merchandise that represents their favorite character or attraction. As proof of this, just look at the hundreds of different themed magic bands that are sold on a daily basis.â€
Baker noted that Disney is already selling cloth face masks featuring princesses, Mickey and Minnie Mouse, Pixar characters, and more.
“I suspect that if the compulsory face coverings continue, they could make park-themed masks as well or expand the character lineup,†she said.
Employees will have to keep their distance.
Park employees, aka “cast members†in Disney lingo, will see changes as well.
“Disney is requiring (employer-provided) face masks on cast members, physical distancing in ‘backstage’ areas, frequent cleaning of those areas, and both at-home and on-site temperature checks,†Baker said. “I suspect they may also have to train them to ensure guest compliance with the new rules, but that is not much different from the current safety functions of these roles.â€
Smith noted that older cast members may not feel comfortable returning to the parks, as seniors appear to be more vulnerable to COVID-19 than younger people.
Additionally, “high-touch†experiences like makeovers and character meet-and-greets are off the table, and character meals have been canceled apart from one modified option at Disney World’s Riviera Resort. Kathleen Wolfe said she feels the lack of character interaction will be the most noticeable change at the reopened parks.
“Nobody wants to spend their vacation at the parks if the fun factor is going to be greatly reduced by the restrictions and shortening of hours.â€
– Scott Smith, an associate professor at the University of South Carolina’s College of Hospitality, Retail and Sports Management
“Without the Disney Pals, Princesses and Villains roaming around, chatting up guests, waving from parade floats, signing autographs and posing for photos, the ‘Disney experience’ will then be missing so much of what defines it as such,†she said. “How people of all ages identify and assimilate with certain Disney characters is a phenomenon you really can only chalk up to magic.â€
She speculated that the characters could return in a modified way, perhaps standing a certain distance behind guests in photos or even in digital form on large screens. Hugs will probably be off the table for a while.
Attendee demographics will skew local.
Disney fans are famously fervent, but experts predict some limits in that devotion in terms of those who choose to return to the parks at first.
“I believe there will be a rush to return by the local population, who have been without their Disney fix for a couple of months,†Smith said, adding that annual pass holders and local residents will likely make up the bulk of the early visitors. Indeed, the company announced that it would be temporarily pausing new ticket sales to accommodate existing ticket holders, annual pass holders and Disney Vacation Club members.
“I believe outside of those groups, people will be hesitant to travel do to the difficulties, i.e., flying, trying to find a hotel that is operating,†he continued. “There is also a ‘wait and see’ mentality that many travelers may hold to see if the Disney experience is worth the investment of time and money. Nobody wants to spend their vacation at the parks if the fun factor is going to be greatly reduced by the restrictions and shortening of hours. It may take several months for people to feel it is time to book a vacation at Disney.â€
Reitz echoed this sentiment. As a local, he said, he’s excited to return because his annual pass has already been paid for and he doesn’t have to spend extra money on lodging to risk an experience that may not live up to expectations.
That’s not the case for most people. Millions of Americans face uncertain financial and employment situations, making them unlikely to book an expensive vacation. Many are also cautious about risking their health and that of loved ones amid the pandemic. The prospect of wearing a mask all day in the summer heat may make the experience less appealing. Florida requires visitors from Connecticut, New York and New Jersey to quarantine for 14 days upon arrival. And it will take quite some time for international visitors to return.
“It’s my belief you’ll see a lot of adult Disney fans return in the first few months of reopening and fewer families,†said Kathleen Wolfe, who has seen many cancellations through her travel agency affiliate. Not only do parents wish to protect their young children’s health, but they also may see less value in a Disney experience without character meet-and-greets.

People flocked to Disney Springs ― the retail, dining and entertainment complex at Walt Disney World ― on the day it began its phased reopening in May. Masks and temperature checks are required there as well.
“Honestly, as a parent who’s taken her daughter every year for the last 16, the ‘character interaction reaction’ factor is what we are paying the high premiums for,†she said. “It’s that endearing and special.â€
Kathleen Wolfe recommends that first-time Disney goers, those who haven’t visited in a long time, those with small children and those with health issues hold off on making expensive Disney plans “until there is a better handle on COVID-19 and the experience can either be restored to its former glory or at least enhanced enough in temporary form to tick all the magical boxes.â€
Marketing will emphasize safety and trust.
Many of the experts believe that Disney’s marketing strategy will adapt to pandemic life and focus on reassuring anxious fans.
“Disney will likely emphasize the safety and security aspects they’ve put into place, and remind potential customers that they’ve always trusted the Disney brand with their families and they should continue to do so,†AJ Wolfe said.
In addition to touting distancing and sanitation measures, Baker predicts the company will initially invest in ads targeted to locals, followed by more national campaigns with messages like “We’re ready to welcome you back†and “The magic is still here.â€
“CEO [Bob] Chapek has mentioned that even in current conditions, the ‘quintessential Disney experience’ and ‘memories that last a lifetime’ will be there,†she said. “Of course it won’t be exactly the same. Temporary cancellation of fireworks, for instance, is very unorthodox for the Magic Kingdom. But I would suspect the marketing will be appealing because people may want to have positive experiences after this period of tragedy and interruption of daily life.â€
Baker added that Disney ranks high in positive perception and brand loyalty, so even just the message of “We’re open again!†will generate interest, at least among its most devoted followers. The key is persuading people that although things will be different for a time, it’s still “The Most Magical Place On Earth.â€
“I don’t need convincing,†said Kathleen Wolfe. “It’s clear to me that in today’s world, now more than ever, I need a place to escape to for just a few moments and live in a land of make-believe. I’m fine with it being an unfamiliar experience in terms of operations, but I have zero doubt that when I arrive on July 16 to all of the familiar sights, sounds and smells, it’s going to feel like the warm hug I’ve been aching for since they closed in March.â€
Mexico’s health ministry reported 4,790 new confirmed coronavirus infections along with 587 additional fatalities on Thursday, bringing the total in the country to 133,974 cases and 15,944 deaths.
The government has said the real number of infected people is significantly higher than the official count.

Local authorities have called on the government to suspend the controversial “no recourse to public funds†immigration status for the duration of the coronavirus pandemic, to prevent thousands from falling into destitution and homelessness.
High numbers of people who have this status attached to their visas have been approaching councils for emergency assistance during the pandemic. Many are struggling to survive during the exceptional circumstances of lockdown, with no safety net, according to the Local Government Association (LGA), which represents councils in England and Wales.
Hundreds of thousands of immigrants in the UK have an immigration status that allows them to work here, but which prevents them from accessing most benefits should they become unemployed. Many have lost their jobs because of the Covid-19 pandemic and are struggling to feed their families and pay rent. Many face losing their homes once restrictions on evictions are lifted.
Brazil reported a total of 802,828 confirmed cases of coronavirus on Thursday, with 30,412 new infections in the last 24 hours in the world’s second worst outbreak after the United States.
With another 1,239 fatalities, the death toll in Brazil has reached 40,919, the health ministry said, the world’s third highest after the United States and the UK.

Dow sinks 1,800 as virus cases rise, deflating optimism
Stocks fell sharply Thursday on Wall Street as coronavirus cases in the US increased again, deflating recent optimism for a quick economic recovery and raising more doubts about how long the market’s scorching comeback can last, AP reports.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average sank more than 1,800 points, almost 7%, and the S&P 500 dropped 5.9%, its worst day since mid-March, when stocks went through repeated harrowing falls as the virus lockdowns began. The S&P 500 rallied 44.5% between late March and Monday, erasing most of its losses tied to the pandemic.

The selling comes as coronavirus cases rise in the US, with some of the increase likely tied to the reopening of businesses and the lifting of stay-at-home orders. Cases are climbing in nearly half the states, according to an Associated Press analysis, a worrying trend that could intensify as people return to work and venture out during the summer.
Investor optimism for a speedy recovery was also dimmed by the Federal Reserve, which warned Wednesday that the road to recovery from the worst downturn in decades would be long and vowed to keep rates low for the foreseeable future.
Those factors, along with the recent run-up in stock prices, set the stage for the wave of selling Thursday.

Stocks fell sharply Thursday on Wall Street as coronavirus cases in the US increased again, deflating recent optimism for a quick economic recovery and raising more doubts about how long the market’s scorching comeback can last. The DOW Jones Industrial Average saw its worst day in weeks, closing down almost 7%.
At a press conference on Wednesday, Federal Reserve chair Jerome Powell spoke of second wave fears, warning, “It could hurt the recovery, even if you don’t have a national level pandemic. Just a series of local ones, of local spikes, could have the effect of undermining people’s confidence in travelling, in restaurants and in entertainment,†he said. “It would not be a positive development.â€
Powell said US unemployment could remain at levels close to the worst of the GFC at the end of the year, and that a second outbreak could mean that figure was optimistic.
Global cases near 7.5 million. There are currently 7,449,476 confirmed cases, according to Johns Hopkins University, and 418,846 deaths.
Brazilian officials have announced an agreement with China’s Sinovac Biotech to produce its coronavirus vaccine in Sao Paulo, where tests involving 9,000 volunteers are to begin next month.
British Airways plans to sell some of its multi-million-pound art collection in an effort to help it through the pandemic. The collection includes pieces by Damien Hirst, Bridget Riley and Peter Doig with one work believed to have been valued at more than £1 million. It is understood at least 10 pieces have been identified for sale by the airline.
Almost half of asymptomatic coronavirus carriers detected in Bahrain were found to pose a risk of spreading the virus to others, according to research by the country’s coronavirus taskforce.
Deaths from Covid-19 in Italy climbed by 53 on Thursdayagainst 71 the day before, Reuters reports, citing the country’s civil protection agency, pushing the total to death toll from the outbreak to 34,167.
European Union officials and experts have said that Europe could face a surge of coronavirus infections in coming weeks as a result of the mass anti-racism protests that have spread across the continent.
10 countries account for nearly 75% of new cases – WHO. Nearly three-quarters of new cases of coronavirus are coming from 10 countries, mostly concentrated in the Americas and south Asia, the director general of the World Health Organization has said.Speaking at the UN health agency’s member state briefing on Thursday, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said that the global situation was deteriorating, even as Europe appeared to be over the worst of the outbreak.

On Wednesday, NASCAR, which has deep roots in the South, banned the Confederate flag, widely seen as a symbol of slavery and segregation, from all events and properties to promote a more inclusive environment. The move came soon after Black driver Bubba Wallace called for a ban.Â
The announcement came as the Black Lives Matter movement gained momentum amid the national outcry over the police killing of George Floyd. NASCAR now also allows team members to kneel during the national anthem as a form of peaceful protest.
NASCAR, one of the few prominent sports organizations up and running since the coronavirus pandemic began, has been televising races without fans in the stands. But a limited number of spectators will be allowed at select races on June 14.

Instagram/Getty ImagesSasha Exeter revealed on Wednesday that Jessica Mulroney, right, who is best friends with Meghan Markle, threatened her livelihood.
Meghan Markle’s longtime best friend Jessica Mulroney is under fire after Canadian brand marketer and entrepreneur Sasha Exeter called Mulroney on her “white privilege†and threatening actions.Â
Exeter, who is Black, said in a nearly 12-minute video on Instagram Tuesday that Mulroney “took offense†at what Exeter described as a generic call to action she shared last week, as protests against police brutality and racism broke out across the world.
Exeter, a former athlete who runs the website SoSoSasha, said that she encouraged her peers and those with large online platforms to “use their voice for good and help combat the race war and what’s happening to the Black community.â€Â Â
In response, Exeter said, Mulroney sent her “a threat in writing.â€
“Unfortunately though, one very prominent Canadian figure, who used to be an acquaintance of mine, named Jessica Mulroney, took offense to a very generic call to action that I shared on my IG stories,†Exeter says in the video. “What happened next was a series of very problematic behavior and antics that ultimately resulted in her sending me a threat in writing last Wednesday.â€Â
Exeter said that she is “by no means calling Jess a racist,†but added that the stylist, who is married to former Canadian Prime Minister Brian Mulroney’s son, Ben, “is very well aware of her wealth, her perceived power and privilege because of the color of her skin.â€Â
“And that my friends gave her the momentary confidence to come for my livelihood in writing,†Exeter stated, shaking her head and calling it an example of “textbook white privilege.â€Â
Exeter said that she takes issue with Mulroney for two reasons, the first being that the TV host hasn’t been using her voice to support the Black Lives Matter movement. Not only does Mulroney normally speak out about causes dear to her, Exeter pointed out that Meghan Markle is “arguably one of the most famous Black women in the world.â€Â
George Pimentel via Getty ImagesJessica Mulroney and Meghan Markle attend the Instagram Dinner on May 31, 2016.
“During the span of about a week or so, Jessica basically ticked every single box of what a white woman should absolutely not do during the biggest racial uproar in history,†Exeter said.
Her second problem with Mulroney was that she “wrongly assumed†that Exeter’s social media callout was directed at her. Â
Exeter says that Mulroney blocked her and then wrote to her saying: “I have also spoken to companies and people about the way you have treated me unfairly. You think your voice matters. Well, it only matters if you express it with kindness and without shaming people who are simply trying to learn. Good luck.â€Â
The entrepreneur said that it was mind-blowing that Mulroney would take such actions, and compared the stylist to Amy Cooper, the woman who recently called the cops on a Black birdwatcher in Central Park, telling the 911 dispatcher that she was being threatened by an “African-American man.â€Â
“For her to threaten me ― a single mom, a single Black mom ― during a racial pandemic blows my mind,†Exeter added. “The goal here is genuine, transformative change ― not optical and performative bullshit. You cannot be posting that you stand in solidarity while attempting to silence somebody via text.â€Â
Mulroney replied to Exeter’s video in an Instagram comment, though it appeared to have been deleted by Thursday afternoon.
“I know we have different experiences. And that is something that, even in the course of a heated argument, I need to acknowledge and understand,†she said in her response. “I am unequivocally sorry for not doing that with you, and for any hurt I caused.â€
Mulroney then alluded to her friendship with the Duchess of Sussex, who has repeatedly been the target of racist treatment.
HuffPost Canada
“As I told you privately, I have lived a very public and personal experience with my closest friend where race was front and centre. It was deeply educational. I learned a lot from that,†she continued. “I promise to continue to learn and listen on how I can use my privilege to elevate and support black voices.â€
Things didn’t end there, though; Exeter subsequently revealed that after Mulroney posted the public apology, she privately direct messaged her.
Exeter came with receipts, posting Mulroney’s message on her Instagram story on Thursday.Â
“Here’s what happens when you call out someone with privilege and wealth. They publicly apologize on your post to preserve their image while privately threaten a lawsuit to try and shut you up,†the SoSoSasha founder said, providing a photo of the message Mulroney sent her.Â
“Liable suit. Good luck,†Mulroney said in the DM, intending to write “libel.â€Â
InstagramSasha Exeter
In a writing over a screenshot of her direct messages, Exeter wrote, “After her public apology on my post yesterday, I received this via DM. Please take in the time stamp in green on the top left of the screen. Also, poor thing didn’t even spell ‘libel’ correctly. Sigh.â€Â
A few hours after Exeter came forward with the lawsuit threat, Mulroney again apologized in five separate Instagram stories to talk about her “disagreement†with the influencer.Â
“She rightfully called me out for not doing enough when it came to engaging in the important and difficult conversation about race and injustice in our society. I took it personally and that was wrong,†she wrote. “I did not intend in any way to jeopardize her livelihood. We had a disagreement and it got out of hand. For that I am sorry.â€Â
She signed off by saying that she will be stepping back from her Instagram and letting Black voices take over her account, saying she had reached out to see if Exeter would also participate.Â
Thursday evening, Bell Media and the CTV Television Network announced that they were pulling Mulroney’s show, “I Do, Redo,†from its channels and platforms as her recent conduct “conflicts with our commitment to diversity and equality.â€
Mulroney’s husband, Ben, is a television host with “eTalk†and “Your Morning,†both of which air on CTV.Â
After Bell and CTV announced the decision, Mulroney said on her Instagram stories that she respected the companies’ choice and made the decision to “step away from my professional engagements at this time.â€Â
She also addressed the libel suit she previously threatened Exeter with and said that she had “no intention of pursuing any legal action.Â
“I was wrong, and for that I am truly sorry,†Mulroney said prior to signing off. “I remain more committed than ever to support anti-racism efforts and will do everything in my power to right this wrong.â€Â
Instagram
Exeter, Mulroney and Bell Media didn’t return HuffPost’s requests for comment.Â
Last week, Mulroney posted an Instagram caption in which she said “someone dear to me†told her that “being silent these days is not enough.â€
“People sometimes use Instagram to be ‘activists,’†she wrote. “But it must go beyond a picture, video or quote you share. It’s about educating your children and what you do to spread equality in real moments.
“Don’t just post a quote and move on,†Mulroney added. “Create real change within your community. I’ve had many lengthy conversations with my children hoping the rest of the world is doing the same.â€
In August 2019, Mulroney posted on Instagram in support of Markle, calling out the “racist bullies†who attacked her.Â
“3 years of undeserved hate and abuse. It’s enough,†Mulroney captioned her post at the time.

With in-person events still shut down for the time being because of the coronavirus pandemic, Queen Elizabeth II is finding new ways to connect with her subjects.Â
Her majesty participated in her first-ever public Zoom call, clips of which were shared on the royal family’s social media accounts Wednesday. The queen participated in the call along with her daughter, Princess Anne, to mark and honour Carers Week in the UK.Â
InstagramA screenshot of Queen Elizabeth II on a Zoom video call.
The royals spoke with Carers Trust, which provides “support to carers across the U.K. through their network of partners, as well as giving carers a voice and highlighting their work to the general public,†according to the royal family Instagram account.
There are currently 7 million people in the UK acting as unpaid caretakers of a family member or friend who needs assistance, the video said.
“Interesting listening to all your tales and stories,†the queen said during the call. “I’m very impressed by what you have achieved already,†she added with a smile. “I’m very glad to have been able to join you today.â€
The queen helped celebrate Prince Philip’s 99th birthday Tuesday at Windsor Castle, where the two have been quarantined since March.
In honor of the occasion, the royal family social media accounts released a rare photo of the two, which was taken last week. Â
As the prince has never really liked celebrating his birthday, it’s likely this was the quiet celebration he always wanted, with video calls from family members.Â
The queen has continued to address the nation during the pandemic and to participate in royal engagements. But it is unclear when the Queen will resume appearing in person at events again.Â
William Hanson, etiquette coach and executive director of The English Manner, anticipated that we can expect to see the queen again in the fall.Â
“I suspect The Queen may still appear on our television screens with pre-recorded messages but in terms of being out and about I suspect it won’t be until end of September/early October onwards when she returns from her usual summer break in Scotland,†Hanson told HuffPost via email.Â
“But there is a thought that due to her age and national importance she may be ‘out of action’ until next year by when, hopefully, a vaccine will have been found,†he added.Â
“The Queen continues to be busy and will follow appropriate advice on engagements,†Buckingham Palace told HuffPost in a statement last month.
OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — Black community and political leaders called on President Donald Trump to at least change the Juneteenth date for a rally kicking off his return to public campaigning, saying Thursday that plans for a rally on the day that marks the end of slavery in America come as a “slap in the face.â€
Trump campaign officials discussed in advance the possible reaction to the Juneteenth date, but despite fierce blowback there are no plans to change it.
From Sen. Kamala Harris of California to Tulsa civic officials, black leaders said it was offensive for Trump to pick that day — June 19 — and that place — Tulsa, an Oklahoma city that in 1921 was the site of a fiery and orchestrated white-on-black killing spree.
“This isn’t just a wink to white supremacists — he’s throwing them a welcome home party,†Harris, a leading contender to be Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden’s running mate, tweeted of Trump’s rally plans.
“To choose the date, to come to Tulsa, is totally disrespectful and a slap in the face to even happen,†said Sherry Gamble Smith, president of Tulsa’s Black Wall Street Chamber of Commerce, an organization named after the prosperous black community that white Oklahomans burned down in the 1921 attack.
At a minimum, Gamble Smith said, the campaign should “change it to Saturday the 20th, if they’re going to have it.â€
Trump announced the rally plan Wednesday afternoon. It comes as his harsh law-and-order stance appears to fall increasingly out of sync with a growing concern over police abuse of African Americans after the killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis.
Trump campaign officials defended the rally.
“As the party of Lincoln, Republicans are proud of the history of Juneteenth,†said Katrina Pierson, senior adviser to the Trump campaign. “President Trump has built a record of success for Black Americans, including unprecedented low unemployment prior to the global pandemic, all-time high funding for Historically Black Colleges and Universities, and criminal justice reform.â€
The Trump campaign was aware in advance that the date for the president’s return to rallies was Juneteenth, according to two campaign officials, who were not authorized to speak publicly about internal discussions and spoke on condition of anonymity.
When the date was discussed, it was noted that Biden had held a fundraiser a year ago on Juneteenth. Though choosing June 19 was not meant to be incendiary, some blowback was expected, the officials said. But the campaign was caught off guard by the intensity, particularly when some linked the selection to the 1921 massacre.
Scheduling the highly anticipated comeback rally in Oklahoma, a state Trump won easily in 2016, raised eyebrows.
The campaign picked Tulsa’s BOK Center, with a listed seat capacity of 19,199. The arena’s Facebook page shows organizers calling off shows there by country singer Alan Jackson and other performers into mid-July, citing the coronavirus pandemic.
Arena marketing director Meghan Blood said Thursday she didn’t know yet about any plans for social distancing or other coronavirus precautions for Trump’s rally, which would be one of the larger public gatherings in the U.S. at this stage of the outbreak.
Campaign officials said safety decisions would be made in coordination with local authorities. A disclaimer on the ticket registration website said attendees voluntarily assume all risks related to exposure to COVID-19 and agree not to hold the campaign liable for any illness.
The campaign officials said the Trump campaign picked Oklahoma because arrangements could be made quickly, for a variety of reasons: Oklahoma has a Republican, Trump-friendly governor; the state is not seeing huge numbers of coronavirus cases; and the arena was “turn-key†and could easily be opened for the rally. Moreover, the rally will be held up the turnpike from a district held by Rep. Kendra Horn, one of the Democrats the GOP feels is vulnerable this fall.
Campaign officials also wanted to hold the rally where they could all but guarantee a big crowd despite coronavirus concerns, according to the officials. Oklahoma is one of the most Republican states in the nation and Trump has not held a rally there as president, so it will likely deliver an enthusiastic audience eager to see him, the officials believed.
Tulsa, an oil center along the Arkansas River, has had its own marches, viral videos and problematic police actions during this month’s unrest.
On Tuesday, Tulsa police released video and said they were investigating officers who handcuffed and arrested two black teenagers for jaywalking. Video of the June 4 incident showed officers pinned one of the two unidentified teens stomach-down on the ground.
“Get off me! I can’t breathe! I can’t breathe! I can’t breathe!†one teen shouts in the police video.
“You can breathe just fine,†the officer replies.
On Monday, a Tulsa police major played down police shootings of African Americans nationally by telling a radio show that statistically, “we’re shooting African Americans about 24% less than we probably ought to be, based on the crimes being committed.â€
And on Wednesday, the same day Tulsa Mayor G.T. Bynum welcomed news of Trump’s rally pick as evidence of the city’s progress against COVID-19, Bynum apologized for remarks about a 2016 police killing of an unarmed black man. Bynum had said the killing was “more about the really insidious nature of drug utilization than it is about race.â€
Nationally, as research brings to light more about the 1921 massacre, Tulsa increasingly is associated with the rampage in which white Tulsans razed a thriving black business community, killing as many as 300 people. Long dismissed by generations of white Tulsans as a race “riot,†the May 31-June 1 events were marked this year by community memorials.
Oklahoma’s black Democratic Party chairwoman also condemned Trump’s rally plan. “A day set aside to commemorate the freedom of enslaved people must not be marred by the words or actions of a racist president,†Alicia Andrews said.
Community groups had earlier canceled a main Tulsa Juneteenth celebration because of the coronavirus pandemic.
Some black Tulsans said they planned to turn out for public protests of Trump on that day. “There’s definitely going to be demonstrating,†Gamble Smith said.

Dozens were teased in an online event. But Sony is remaining tight-lipped about the machine’s price.
Any new console will have a hard time navigating the tough economic waters that lie ahead, but Sony’s reluctance to tell us how much its next machine will cost won’t help consumers figure out if they can afford it.
But PlayStation chief executive Jim Ryan thinks gaming in general is relatively well-placed to weather the potentially financially tough times ahead.
The interview below has been edited for length and clarity.

Can you tell us a little bit about the PS5’s design, because at first glance it looks more like something that you would find in the furniture section of a store rather than its consumer electronics zone?
The PlayStation sits in the living area of most homes, and we kind of felt it would be nice to provide a design that would really grace most living areas. That’s what we’ve tried to do. And, you know, we think we’ve been successful in that.
How important are exclusives like Spider Man: Mile Morales and Gran Turismo 7 to this new machine?
Exclusive games are obviously one point of difference between our system and others.
But I really call out the criteria of quality rather than necessarily exclusivity. And when I look at our worldwide studios, it’s really the quality of the work that they produce that counts.

Media captionWATCH: PlayStation 5 console and games revealed
At the moment, we seem to be talking about better graphics and faster load times, but what else does next-gen offer?
We think 3D audio is a paradigm shift. We think the functionality of the new controller, which again has to be experienced to be fully appreciated, is a paradigm shift. We think the the SSD [solid state drive] storage mechanism, and the way that it can actually help you move between worlds in games and eliminate loading times is a paradigm shift.
You know, we went to great lengths to show that off with considerable length in The Ratchet and Clank demo. You saw the way that Ratchet was moving from world to world. On previous generations, the character would have needed to walk down a corridor while loading was going on in the background. Now it just happens instantaneously.

I know previous generations have tended to be about better graphics, you know, greater grunt in the CPU [central processing unit]. But we think that we’ve got a number of features here that are going to enhance the sensory experience of the game and allow developers to do really cool and different things.
There was a really varied mix of games in the presentation – big PlayStation franchises, but also quite a bit of stuff from smaller studios, which seems quite an unusual decision for the very first gameplay reveal for a new console.
We wanted triple-A games that would fully demonstrate the horsepower of the machine. But some of these smaller games are making very cool and innovative use of the new features of the console. So we allowed the show to give a sense of the sheer range of gameplay experience that will be available on PlayStation 5. And this is just the start. There are so many more games that we have in development.

Sackboy, something of a mascot for PlayStation, gets a new adventure
The box itself comes in two different flavours, a digital-only version, and one with a disc drive. Will there be a significant price difference?
You’re not going to hear anything on price today. But many of our many of our consumers are purchasing solely digitally these days. We thought that we would do what we typically try and do, and just offer choice.
The PS5 event was postponed by a week as a result of the unrest in the United States at the moment. Did that situation lead to any changes in the content shown or anything else in today’s presentation?
No, it did not.

And as we enter a period of economic uncertainty, is it a good time to be releasing a new machine?
Conventional wisdom and history show that our business is one of the more recession-proof businesses. But I think this will sharpen our need to ensure that we focus on getting the value equation right. And I emphasise value as opposed to price.
We must be more attentive than ever before to ensure that the overall value proposition in terms of the console and the games – the range of games, the quality of games, the quantity of games – makes this something that our community aspires towards.
PML-N President and Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly Shehbaz Sharif has tested positive for coronavirus, party spokesperson Marriyum Aurangzeb confirmed on Thursday.
Shehbaz, 69, a cancer survivor, is isolating at home, Aurangzeb said, adding that the PML-N leader was following his doctors’ advice on how to fight the infection.
PML-N representative Ata Tarar revealed that Shehbaz had himself tested for COVID-19 after showing mild symptoms of the infection. He said that the result of the test came back positive on June 10, at 4pm.
“He was summoned on June 9 by NAB. We kept saying he is a cancer survivor, and even if you do want to conduct the investigation then do so via video link. However, this is blind political vendetta,” he said.
In response to a question about the former Punjab chief minister traveling with hundreds of PML-N workers and not paying heed to social distancing protocols, Tarar said that he had appealed to the party’s supporters to remain indoors and not gather at public places.Â
“It wasn’t an official call from the party [for them to come out],” he said. “We wanted to avoid this situation. I want to say on record that if God forbid, anything were to happen to him, NAB and Imran Niazi will be held responsible.”
Tarar said that the party had submitted in writing that the PML-N president was a cancer survivor hence his life was at risk from the infection.Â
Reiterating that there was no need for Shehbaz to appear in person for the investigations, Tarar said that the party had requested that the PML-N leader be allowed to answer questions via video link to ensure he remained safe from the virus.Â
Shehbaz had appeared on June 9 at NAB Lahore after he was summoned by the anti-graft body to answer questions related to the assets beyond means and money laundering case.Â
The opposition leader’s appearance at the NAB Lahore office lasted for a little over an hour. A large number of PML-N supporters had gathered outside the office to chant slogans in support of the party leader.
A day earlier, PML-N Secretary-General Ahsan Iqbal tested positive for coronavirus.
“I request my friends and well-wishers to pray for my quick recovery,” Iqbal had written on Twitter.
“May God keep everyone safe from this pandemic,” he added.
Earlier, Aurangzeb has tested positive for the coronavirus along with her mother.
So far, many prominent politicians have been contracted coronavirus.Â
